So.... pretty much equivalent to a 2TR-FE once you compensate for the difference in engine speed by regearing.
    Both 160 hp...
267 footpounds at 3200 rpm vs 181 footpounds at....
    267/181 * 3200 = 4720 rpm. Check.

    With performance being identical,
And typical diesel engine winter starting being pretty sucky,
Unless it can do way better than 50 mpg, you'll never break even on fuel savings (remember that diesel COSTS more than gasoline).

    What's the point of this?
Oh right... its the "BECAUSE.... DIESEL!!!" cool factor.

Longevity is really all the diesel has going for it. Cost savings on fuel gets lost to maintinence costs. So the $25,000k could maybe be saved by preventing one vehicle purchase over time.

Well, except that you're comparing the longevity of a diesel engine against an inline 4 gas TOYOTA engine, which will surely outlast the rest of the truck anyway. Doesn't much matter if the diesel engine will last an extra million miles vs the gas engine, if the gas engine already lasts a million miles longer than the rest of the truck.

This would be a sweet motor for a suzuki samurai.

I have no idea what your point is. Are you saying there is no point putting a diesel in a Taco because the frame will rot far before the gas engine would have died?

    If so I belive you.

The benefit of this over an ls1 is that it would be emissions compliant in CA.

    Any more word this motor?

If your lucky to own a 4cyl 5spd 4x4 2nd gen the 1kd-ftv will bolt directly in place of the 2tr-fe. The clutch housing and motor mounts all swap right over.

Hello All. I am Joe with Doomsday Diesel. I already have plans in the works for an R2.8 swap kit for the 2nd gen Tacoma's. I currently build the swap kits for the OM617 Mercedes into the 1979-1995 Toyota Pickups/4Runners, but the OM617 is too under-powered for the 2nd gen Taco's. I am gearing up to make the first swap for the R155 equipped 4 cyl trucks. May then move on to the V6 trucks with the RA60F, but have heard lots of bad reviews on that transmission. I'm sure the Auto guys will want a swap kit, but if you're familiar with a 4BT/TH400 combo at all, you'll know that gasoline auto transmissions don't typically like the low-end torque of a diesel. Would really like to get this motor into a full crew cab Tacoma eventually. I welcome all feedback. I am very price conscientious and will keep the weekend-warrior's budget in mind. I love diesel and I love Toyota, so this is a dream come true for me! Thank you Cummins for releasing a crate motor!!!

Will also try to hit the 1st gen Taco's shortly thereafter, as well as offer something to the 79-95 crowd (since the 80's are my favorite). But might be a while till kits come out for 2016+. Besides, Toyota will likely release their Diesel over here soon, anyways. They've probably been building them longer overseas than anyone else. They just need a reason to bring them to the U.S., and the Colorado might be that reason.

Any interest in a kit for FJ80/FZJ80? I think there'd be a huge market for them, especially with a manual conversion all available as a package. You can pick up high mileage or blown motor Cruisers for next to nothing.

2nd gen Tacomas are still so expensive, even with high miles or a blown engine.

CARB compliance is the selling point for me on a swap like this.

My thought is to wait for the R3.8 for the V6 trucks and FJ's. That way, you can have similar power for the heavier vehicles, and the transmissions should work the same with the adapter. The 3.8 can put out well over 400 lb*ft, and is probably going to be similar in potential to the 4BT. Swapping the 4.0 V6 for the 2.8 might be a huge mistake if the HP drops too significantly. The 3.8 is very light (about 600 lbs) compared to the 4BT, and will probably be a very feasible swap if the motor isn't too big for the hole it's going into. It is quite a bit larger than the 2.8.

But time will tell. I want to see how the 2.8 performs, and maybe even swap a 2.8 with an R155 into a double cab truck, before I invest in creating the RA50F swap package.

After about 47 years. I think diesel fanboys really over estimate diesel motors capabilities. A diesel swap will not be financially advantageous in a reasonable time and "coolness factor"? LMAO please.

What new, CARB compliant crate engines are you comparing to? As far as I know, there's just the Erod, which is a big block v8. This seems like a great swap for us folks in CA looking to modernize older rigs.

This swap's not going to pay itself off; although, the OM617 swap can if you do it right. Cool factor is HIGH. Definitely a life changing experience once you do your first diesel swap into something that didn't come with one. California swaps are also typically very difficult because of emissions, so this is many peoples' answer to their prayers. I just wish they'd release a higher output model with less emissions compliance for places like Nebraska/Kansas where we don't believe in emissions. No reason to release a California compliant motor everywhere. Have a California/Arizona model like any other car, and a high output version for the other 48. As for the guys wanting to do a gasser swap, go for it. Any swap is a lot of fun. Turbo 5.3's are nuts! We're just here to talk about a Cummins swap. No need to bash people for what they think is cool.

Only reason people want diesel in the tacoma is "look me I have a diesel!" there is absolutely zero benefit to it in a mid size truck.

It's a $9k motor. Of course it's so you can turn heads! Also cool for a lot of other reason, like rock crawling. I have tons of customers doing the Mercedes swap just so they can spend a whole day on the trail instead of having to fuel up half way thru. I can just never figure out why people read threads about topics they dislike. Like seriously, how did you end up here?! LOL

I just go to threads I either start, or google because I'm trying to figure something out. I see myself as a Diesel Brother that was put up for adoption at birth in Utah and ended up in Nebraska. I googled the Tacoma community interest in the Cummins since I'm investing beaucoup bucks in it. Are you considering the swap?
