    I put 100000 miles on my 5th gen 4Runner and it was a very solid vehicle. I would say it's one of the best built vehicles on the road.They had/have issues to;
    - Transmission shift issues
    - Hood vibration
    - Excessive nose dive during braking
    - Driver seat issues

My Tacoma is not perfect, but it's one hell of a nice truck.

usafwx is right, 4Runners are still made in Japan. It's sad, but the build quality is much higher there. I lived in Oregon in the early 90's, that's when I started driving Toyotas. They all came in through the Port of Portland. My LX 570 was built in Japan, very solid truck.

I have a 4RLTD great suv well made in Japan. So well made thought-out that I didn't even have to spend extra $$ to buy protective door sills for all four doors. The smart key system works on the passenger side and the hatch by touch, the windows have express up & down the seats are power up & down, and the driver's side has a built in grab handle. And those are just a few nice perks.
But unfortunately, It's not a pickup truck with a built in bed to carry tall awkward items a camper and such, you need to tow or haul a trailer around for that and parking that can be a challenge in smaller parking lots and narrow roads.
For that, owning a '16 Toyota Tacoma is priceless!

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

Thanks all for the info. I for one think the tacoma's are solid trucks, just the trans sucks in higher altitudes. I'm thinking of trading in on a 4 Runner only because of the shifting is driving me crazy. Truck runs awesome around town but highway is Constant hunting gears fourth through six gear at 65-75 mph. Really wish there was a fix.

Just a heads up that my 2014 4Runner does the same. Just lock it in a gear and hold it. Also my 4Runner feels weaker than my second gen tacoma did because it is the same engine lugging around a heavier vehicle.

Our '16 4R has been as solid as my '10 Tacoma has been, which is very. The only issue so far is the paint on the center console, which has started to flake and decay. Very minor thing, but taking it in for inspection anyway. We've owned it for about 10 months at this point.

I wish my Tacoma would lock in gear but even in sport mode it's constantly downshifting even forth to third gear. I would be able to live with it if I could tell it what gear to stay in.

You don't state the mileage on your truck, but mine made substantial shift improvements all the way to 1800 miles and smaller finer adjustments after that.
Then after some 7-8k I had to check to see if I had somehow pressed the ect button because it felt as if it was on. I now have 10k and the shifting could not be better.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

I have not been driving it that much because it irritates me, I have other vehicles.
Only 1700 miles on the truck. I guess there is hope.. Thanks that helps a lot.

I had a '95 Runner that was rock solid. The made in Japan deal still holds true in my opinion. Every car or truck I had made in Japan has been pretty trouble free.

If Lexus (made in Japan) ever makes a truck...Lookout!
But all I've heard so far are faint rumors

Once I put 33's on it started having issues shifting that my Tacoma never did. Won't hold a speed on CC if there is any kind of incline or decline.

The build quality has nothing to do with the few current 3rd gen problems. Not sure why people keep bringing that up as some mystical japan thing.

It's lets it slip about 2-3 not a big deal, it just freaks out when it hits a hill, slows 3 mph and downshifts super aggressivly to get back up, then it over compensates and goes 3 mph over whatever I set it at. On flat it's great.

My SR5 is 4 years old now, love it, no issues. Off roads like a champ. I can fold down the rear seat and sleep in the back when off in BFE land. I wouldn't trade it for anything. There's a good reason you don't see much whining in the TR4 forum. Little to nothing to whine about. Also, TR4's are still made exclusively in Japan. Much better QC over there. Loved all my Tacomas over the years but my 4runner is top dog.
