Curious about upgrading to the dual-zone climate control.... If possible...

    Hey guys,

So I'm a new member, although I've used the forum a lot doing research from when I bought my 09 TRD Off Road 4x4 a few years ago, and now I've bought the 2017.

I recently went on a road-trip with my girlfriend to VT and we argued over the temperature control most of the way home, I was too hot, she was too cold (put on a sweater woman!).

Anyhow, I wanted to know if anybody knew about upgrading from the standard climate control to the dual-zone climate control? All I have are assumptions:
    1. the wiring that controls the fans and temperature controls I would imagine use the same wiring harness, since it would ease manufacture if the wiring was the same throughout each trim
    2. the only thing that really makes the dual-zone climate control different is maybe an extra hookup/independent controller for each side of the truck, and the DZCC has the computer that decides what changes happen based on the temperature set.

Going with these assumptions, I'd imagine that as long as I was able to buy the DZCC, I could just take the old one out, and plug the new one in and it would work. I don't imagine there being a difference between the function of the climate control between an auto and manual transmission truck, just what Toyota is willing to offer in their packages.

    Thoughts?

I don't know the answers but wanted to mention that you could get heated/cooled leather from Katskin (sp?). Not cheap but another option that would let each of you adjust a bit from the ambient. It also adds leather if you like that look.

If you get the P&T package it does.

I am not sure on this so don't take this as hard facts, but I would think the blend doors would have to be different because you would need a blend door and motor for each side, and if so then the pipes to the vents would also be different.
Again, this is just me thinking, maybe a toyota tech can enlighten us on this subject.

I wasn't sure if there was a difference in vent doors, but a blend door sounds like it would make sense. I haven't looked too far into whether I could have gotten it or not, but the dealership told me that it wasn't available in the OR with a manual, only the automatic.

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the push button start or not, but I would assume that it wouldn't.

I will look into the heated/cooled seats, I assume there's more options than just leather.

Go with the butt warmers. By far it will be the cheapest, easiest way of adding a measure of temperature control to the truck.

News flash: dealerships lie all the fucking time.

Source: 3rd gen TRD OR 6MT w/ P&T sitting on my garage right now, dual zone climate may be the only reason I'm still married to this day.

I feel ya, this is the only reason why we have the Premium/Tech Package. So she could have dual zone and heated seats..

+1 for the heated seat addon

Im not sure if the control module is built into the CC, but you'll probably need to wire in ambient air temperatures, along with the possibilities of the blend door motors.

Yeah, I know. I know I COULD HAVE custom ordered it if I really wanted it that bad, I bought the only manual they had on the lot. I just wasn't willing to trade my truck in and be without one for close to two months.

The ambient air sensor looks like its already installed based on the diagrams I've been able to pull up, but theres at least $500 worth of parts that appear to be specific to the DZ if I'm reading them right, and thats not including the control section. So it looks like I'll be passing on this one. Plus I've come across a couple articles of Toyotas having issues with their DZCC systems, although none specifically stating the Tacoma.

Looks like those seat warmers are the way to go

Yeah, I'm looking around, those Katskin ones are beautiful, but also damn expensive. The Wet Okole ones aren't bad, but the pictures of them aren't very flattering either.

Anyhow, thanks for all the help guys

Someone asked this a few weeks back.

I went through the service manuals and wiring diagrams and determined that no, it is not *practically* possible to add DZ climate control.

It is *theoretically* possible but since you don't have dual zone control motors, etc. you would need a whole slew of different parts and it would probably cost you thousands & thousands, and a lot of headache.
