custom grill question

Well I think $200 for some mesh that will get "abused" (highway driving, bugs, rocks kicking up from cars, rock salt, mud etc) is not worth it. I have heard the mesh is heavy duty but the custom car grills mesh hit with some Plastidip has held up very well and it's been about a year. Plus that $150 I saved could be used on other mods.

 

has anyone here colormatch there chrome grill? havn,t seen any write ups or comments on them,i want to make a custom grill but not sure if i need a new unpainted one or if my chrome one can be painted.

Mine wasn't hard at all. Carefully remove grill, separate black insert from silver shell. Cut center out of black insert. Dry fit. Trim for better fitment. Dry fit again. Glue with "GOOP". Fit outer and inner back together and attach screws. Wait for goop to cure and reinstall. I finished it in about 2.5 hours and let it dry for about 36.

 

Some wacky people may consider paying $60 more than the alternative to be wasteful. Go figure.

OP for the 05-11 grills its completely different than the 12-15 models.

If you want a thin lip, you cut out the center and cut the lip leaving just around half an inch or so. Then you have the mount the mesh from the back, typically through zip ties with drilled holes in the back.

If you want a deep lip, you cut out the middle, fill in the gaps on the sides with either bondo/fiberglass/plastic etc., and then do the same with the mesh.

Or, if you want a flushmount, you can get a grill craft which requires cutting out the center grill and drilling holes on the sides to mount it.
