I'm looking at the 4xinovations skids, they are 1/4 plate and they are only $420. Almost $200 cheaper than budbuilts.

I had no idea they made skids, def don’t think they were when I was looking back in the day. I dig them though, I wonder if they mount to the rack mounts out back? Surprised they don’t make a t case one. Honestly that skid has been my most important one of all.

Yes with the truck being at a longer wheelbase, the tcase is always on my mind. I think it should be easy enough to fab up one, that and a gas tank skid.

Truth especially if you fab up a crossmember as well. I would still reinforce it with angle though, to prevent as much deflection as possible.

IIRC @turbodb who has a set, told me that Eric is no longer making skids for our truck. I was just looking on the Relentless website but couldn't find anything.

    Yep, on both counts.

Eric's skids have been great - I have no complaints about the IFS skid at all - good reinforcement in all the right places, has taken a beating on my truck since I have little lift and was running it with 31's for a while. The mid skid could use a bit more reinforcement in the middle, but that wouldn't be hard to add.

The skids are all 3/16" and he doesn't stock them anymore, but I'm sure he's still got the templates and could bang out a set for the right price. First gens are just getting less important to stock parts for, given age.

1/4" for a skid, Jesus!!! Just run the 3/16 stuff and let it get all mangled up.

Putting my IFS skid has become a 45mins to an hour process because of how mangled it is. Fucking annoying lol

Honestly, this was half my motivation for wanting to SAS the truck.. damn IFS skids are annoying.
I would take mine to a friends shop every once in a while and put it in a flat break 30ton press to help straighten it

Can you make the bolt holes a hair bigger? Mine is far from straight but I have oversized holes and haven't had much of a problem putting them on

The biggest issue I have is lining up the lip of the skid extension to go behind the new front crossmember. Once that locks in I know I am good, but it take a sledge to make it happen.

Yes! thank you for all your help and advice dude! Got it charged yesterday and got 33* on the infrared thermometer today. Big thank you to @loosnut for the recommendation on the shop for the charging and letting me borrow his truck!

So this AC repair was by far one of the most frustrating projects I have taken on so far with this truck. I was already intimidated by it because it was a system I did not yet understand and the idea of needing to precisely oil components freaked me out.

Here were all the components I was supposed to be replacing:

[IMG]IMG_1957 by Michael Halat, on Flickr

    I followed this guide:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/1st-gen-a-c-system-replacement-how-to-seized-compressor.293204/

Combined with the FSM, links @ThunderOne sent me and other tips as well.

Started on the outside with pulling the drier, condenser and compressor.

    IMG_1772 2.jpg

I was very nervous because the lower compressor bolts were super fucking tight and I was afraid to strip them/had no range of motion on the ratchet. But eventually got it busted loose and out. Ended the day with everything out of the truck including the evap:

[IMG]IMG_1959 by Michael Halat, on Flickr

I had a line stuck on the condenser though due to a snapped bolt head. Ordered the line and planned on rebuilding the system another day.

[IMG]IMG_1960 by Michael Halat, on Flickr

Got the line and tried to finish up. Cleaned the evap out, got the new pressure switch in (though the aftermarket switch was larger than the OEM denso noted here:

    IMG_1827.jpg

Not as many threads got used when mounting it but it still worked fine. Oh and the one o-ring they provided was too big for the smaller port:

[IMG]IMG_1963 by Michael Halat, on Flickr

[IMG]IMG_1962 by Michael Halat, on Flickr

Measured out the proper amount of pag-46 and slapped the interior back together.

    IMG_1826.jpg

From here photos were more sparse.

I got the compressor oiled up, and manifold mounted:

[IMG]IMG_1965 by Michael Halat, on Flickr

I had almost re-assembled the entire thing only to find out the big nut on the line that went from the drier to the condenser was stripped. Ordered another one from toyota and got the system closed the next day. Then got it charged on Wednesday and it leak tested great and now am getting ice cold AC again. So happy this project is complete.
