Dakars with Icon 2.0's?

    Was wondering if I can run Dakars with my 2.0 resi icons. Currently running Deaver J66's and I am over the bottoming out!! Wish I can run Allpro standards but I dont think my icons are long enough...Thanks for your input!

    Its their leaf spring so they have shocks off the shelf for them. Also I'm trying to keep it on poor mans budget! Lol

    There are people out there running this setup, like PSU_Taco85 and he even has an extra leaf in his Dakars:

    However, I don't think your Icon 2.0's are long enough for the OME Dakars and definitely not long enough to run the AllPro leafs. If you get longer leafs then you're going to need to get a longer shock to avoid overextending it. If you want the Dakars and want to stay with Icon shocks in the rear, you're going to have to get them built to accomodate the Dakars. I called DSM the other day and they can have them built to work with the Dakars, but normally the Icon rear shocks only work with up to 1.5" of lift, which is what your Deaver J66's are giving you right now. You can get the Icon 2.0 rears without the remote resi for under $300 from them as well, which puts you at around $700 to do this. You could try calling DSM and see if they could rebuild the Icons you have now to work with the Dakar, it might be cheaper than buying a new shock? :notsure:

    I have the allpro standard leaf spring waiting in my basement for when DSM gets my Icon shocks in and they said they can extended the 2.0s with resi to run with a 3" leaf pack for no additional price so ill let you know how it goes when I get all my parts in hopefully it should be soon. I guess icon is out of shock bodies so there backed up.

    I have ICON resi's and due to a broken factory leaf spring, I'm upgrading and having OME Dakars 2.75' lift going in next Friday. I e-mailed ICON yesterday as to whether these shocks will work with the higher lift, as I think they are not intended for more than about 1.5" of lift.

    I know ICON makes shock extender brackets for some vehicles but not sure if they have them for 2nd gen's. If not, there is the Toytec extender option or making my own from hardware store crap.

    Yea I talked to them a few days ago and told me they wouldnt work! And if I do run them not to push the rear hard or the shocks become limit straps. But then again I thought the shocks already act as limit straps....:-/

    If you cant use extenders as a temp fix, one might be able to make limit straps for the rear lol. Lame but might work, until you (and I suppose me) figure something out that doesnt require buying shocks all over again.

    That's a good point. I know bump stops stop the tires from over stuffing but what stops everything from over-extending? I would have thought it was the shocks as well.

    99% of what I do is street and the 1% is normally just mud holes, so we'll see how long the shocks last, until they blow up lol. I can make my own toytec style extender the only hard part is finding the long-style hex nut. I can chop the other piece out of a bolt. Otherwise I will do some straps I guess (rolls eyes)

    what you need is the extended length of your current shock. this will tell you what you're getting into with your questions. the OME rear shocks that the vendors suggest with the dakars are only 23.94 inches fully extended. this is no more than 1.5 inches longer than stock (2nd gen) rear... so if your shocks are meant for 1.5 inches of lift they should in fact work just fine with the dakars.. get your current extended length and you will have your answer.

    call icon, they must have this detail, you shouldn't need to actually measure. or maybe a vendor that has icon and ome, tell them you are considering one or the other, ask them to measure so you are at least getting them measured the same way.. and yes the shocks are what limit down travel most of the time.

    i run sky jacker h7045 rear shocks with my dakars, just under an inch longer then the OME shocks, works great and you could probably get these for $45 in the usa.

    So I got the new leaf pack in. It fixed the horrible clunking and metal to metal noises the worn and broken factory pack made and no squeaking either! I'm sure the squeaking will come back at some point though.

    Now one thing did get worse. As some know when you lift a reg cab Tacoma about an inch or more in the rear and you take your foot off the gas on the freeway and coast, you get a mild but if the radio is off, annoying driveline noise. With the old 1.25" block I had, the noise went away once the truck slowed to about 50-55 MPH.

    The 1.25" block I had in at that time was a tapered block. I mentioned the noise to the guy and he said he was going to use a 2.5 degree shim with this new leafpack and he did. That 2.5 degree shim looks to my eyes, the same degree change as the 1.25" tapered lift block was.

    Now with the extra 1.5" of lift, it makes this same noise all the way down to around 38MPH now instead of 50MPH.

    Question is. Since the shim they used seems to be about the same degree as the block was and now it's lifted twice as high, would using a 4 or 6 degree shim move that noise back up into the higher speed range so I don't have to listen to it around town or maybe even kill it all together?

    The trade off is the bigger degree shim, will also slightly raise the truck a little higher and it's allready higher than what I wanted in the first place but looks better than I thought it would, considering it's now 2.0" higher than the front end.

    I can live with it the way it is since i listen to the radio lol but wondering if a 4 or 6 degree shim would improve the noise problem.
