Why make a dirt bike street legal instead of just saving the time and effort and get a supermoto/dual sport/whatever?

Unless you buy new you're pretty limited in what you get. For 2012 or older you're looking at either a Suzuki DRZ400, a Yamaha WR250R, or one of the many random KTM's that have been out.

I would have no problem buying a CRF450X or WR450F since they're both trail bikes. The caveat to that is I'd never buy one that is already converted unless I got to look over all the wiring for it in detail. Some peoples methods of making these things street legal is terrible haha

Thanks for your input Brent. Didn't know that about the KTMs for those years. I really want e start, especially for those occasions when you kill it in a tricky spot and you're tired.

What do you mean about the cons to having a 2t on the street?

And yeah the Yamaha seems sweet, just got a lot of stickers haha. Says he never did anything but tires and suspension. Novice 42 year old rider...

A lot of dual sports are stupid and designed with higher ratio transmissions, stiffer suspensions, and emissions. I want a trail bike.

I would love a Honda CRF250x but damn they're hard to find.

2 strokes for sure provide more power per cc's, but they require so much more maintenance including rebuilds if you want it to last.
Also a good point. From what it sounds like you're wanting I'd either get an already street legal from the factory KTM, some type of CRF X model, or a WR F model.

Reason for the KTM is they're basically a street legal trail bike. So you're going to get everything you like about a trail bike but it's already legal.

CRF X models and WR F models are great options as well since they're cheaper than KTM's.

All of those options are going to require more maintenance than a DRZ, CRF L model, or WR R model.

I DD a long travel truck right now haha, I'm cool with the maintenance.
I've just heard a 2 stroke can be more enjoyable on the trails because you can really lug them down.

I ride from about march till novemeber on my sport bike and have had dirt bikes also. My truck maybe gets 4k miles a year right now. Any street two stroke i have been around was noisy and a pain for mixing the gas all the time. I have seen quads that have auto mixing now which is cool but you still had to watch the oil levels. 4 stroke was easier on the commutes and what i have seen for bikes is buy nice or buy twice, My next bike will be a dual sport bc a few buddies all ride and we fly fish alot. I have seen like pc builder said some serious no no's on wiring a bike to make it street legal so make sure u really look it over.

    Ok I understand, good point.

The DOT kit is the least of my worries. I'm not totally against buying one street legal from the factory, but want it as offroad friendly as possible.

Only reason I'm looking at a used one is because it's a first bike.

I still might decide to go buy a brand New KTM 300 XCF-W and have the dealer put a DOT kit on it to build some credit.

from what i have read, do you want this as a commuter or a dirt bike because thats two whole different types of bikes. U cant really have both in one bike. Thats why i have my RR and am looking for a off road bike.

What? I thought 2 stroke need to be revved to produce power. You can't lug around a 2 stroke like you can a 4

I want a dirt bike. Always thrown in the back of my truck and taken to the hills. Never need to go over 50 mph. I simply want the ability to drive it to work (2.5 miles) if I'm working on my truck or drive it on FS roads.
I dunno man, I've heard both. I also like the linear power range of the 4 stroke.

Ya in idaho u can ride a dirt bike on the streets so long as it has a headlight and tail light. You dont need a helmet or blinkers or mirrors haha, but washington is different, so i would buy a dirt bike and add that shit to it if ur commute is 2.5 miles. When it comes to dirt bikes the newer and less they have been ridden the better but thats what drives the cost.

One time I was going into Idaho and saw a biker take his helmet off and throw it to the side of the road while going 70 on i90.. Must not plan on coming back to Washington on his bike haha

2 strokes power band is higher in the rev range, put they can make a lot more power with same displacement then a four stoke. 2 stroke is different riding then a 4.
