    if your not racing and just running trails, get a four stoke. It will be so much easier to ride

    Yeah it is a 250 two stroke.. But you can lug them, especially with the right pipe and gearing.

    I didn't read all this discussion, but I much prefer riding two stokes. Currently on and prefer a 200 EXC, although I've logged quite a lot of miles on a newer 200 XCW, a 300 XCW, and a WR450. Weight is a huge concern for me given my size, and highly advantageous to the single track riding I like. I have no desire to ride bikes on the streets for the most part.

    Also, check the laws for you state. In Colorado, it's very easy to plate and title a dirt bike. Then you don't have all that emission, safety, and weight adding bullshit. My 200 is plated, but riding it on the street is not much fun. I only ride it to and between trails. In Colorado you need DOT tires (remove after inspection), a horn (remove it right after the inspection), headlight, brakelight, and one mirror.

    It use to happen between here in nebraska and iowa not sure if it still does. They buy a cheap helmet throw it off the side of the road then stop on the way back

    What year is your 200 EXC? All those bikes are great! I personally wouldn't want a 300 XCW or a WR450 for weight and power reasons being a smaller dude and new to this.

    Our state is pretty similar and you have the exact idea I have. The street legal ability is purely for convienence. Not a regular commuter.

    If you're not commuting on it, then say screw it and just get a non-street legal one. When you do have to get on the road, just avoid the 5-0

    It's a '99. The newer 200 I've ridden is a '07, and is mostly identical including an absolutely identical engine. The newer one does have inverted forks though, which are better for bigger hits, jumps, etc, but I've found they're actually not as good for the slower speed single track. Here it is after a day riding Sovereign single track in Moab.



    The WR450 was awesome on the roads and fireroads, but was miserable on the trails for what I like to do. The KTM 300 is generally considered easier to ride than the 200s, as you can lug them better and not be shifting as much. I found them significantly less fun to ride because of this, and not enough increase in power to justify it over the 200.

    Wow that's awesome! I was looking at a 99 KTM 250 EXC, already plated, for $2200. But everyone at work was like nah that's way too old the suspensions have changed so much. So many things could be wrong with it.

    Yeah, well, if I had lots of money I'd go buy a new 200 XC-W or a Beta 250RR. Price seems a little high for that 250 though depending on condition. Keep in mind the 250 is on the same frame as the 300, while the 200 is smaller overall.

    Depends on condition, but probably closer to $1,800.

    Oh, and, you're asking the wrong guy on that second question. For the mountain single tracks that I ride, 2 strokes are the only way to go.
