I'm still paying off my loans from 10 years ago, I've got 8,000 or so left. I went through a hard time about 8 years ago and didn't have a job for a year, so I put my loan on hold, no payments but the interest still built up, now I"m paying for that bad time.

I was considering community service. According to them, for every year served they reduce your loans by 15%. That would help a lot. And the community. But me mostly!!

Go on, tell me more?! Is this a year's worth of full time service (40hrs/week x 52wks = 2080hrs of service) or one year as in (24hrs/day x 365days/yr = 8760hrs). I really don't have the time for either but if I can help pay off my loan, I'll try anything.

i really wonder if school is worth the cost. i went to college for a year before i dropped out and enlisted in the air force. i decided college was not worth paying for. now i have valuable skills in aviation maintainence, tuition assistance and the gi bill.

I believe it's something like one day a week for a year. At least that's what I understood.

They're no fun. I went into the right field, so paying them is no problem, but it'd be nice to have that extra cash each month to beef up my retirement contributions or spend on truck toys...

Only debt right now is the student loan and the truck payment. And they're very manageable.

Im going on my GI Bill and have a disability from the VA (30%+almost 400/mo.) but I still have taken two semesters just to have a small buffer if I need it. I am for sure going to need it for a sememster abroad.... I dont expect to walk out of college making 45K a year unless I can get picked up with USSD or USAID or or go back to gov't service...

Why not? Pick the right field and that's easily attainable.

The catch is whether or not you like the work.

The economy here is Wichita is crap, my job is good right now while I'm in college, but, I would love to get back overseas and do some work while doing my masters. my dream job would be to work for FEMA or a rescue agency someplace and do disaster relief emergency management.

I agree. The most important thing is to make your living doing something you enjoy. If you like it, it won't always feel like work. If you don't like your job, you could make money and be miserable

    Looking!
My son has $70,000 in loans, and is an aircraft mechanic. Payments are tough, but he realizes he makes $18,000 more per year than he would have, so he is still a little bit ahead.

The return on investment on education is massive.

If you're going to go into debt for anything, make it education.

Very true, I started out of school making 42k, after 2 years was making 55k, hated it (workers comp insurance). Left for something I love and still love. They pay cut was huge, after 3.5 (4 in Feb)yrs of this finally got back to where I started. I work at Southwest Airlines and love my job, but it is very true that they are not known for their salaries.

Yes it is. My roommate/tenant is an engineer at Hawker, so it will be interesting to see what happens to him. I hope he stays...he pays half my mortgage!

yes i do know. i only took out 25k and my payments are only right around 300 per month but damn, itd be nice to have taht $300....

worst part is, i never used my degree and i prolly never will. of course 25k is a small price to pay for a 3 year ongoing party with more hot horny coeds and more kegs than you can shake a stick at. i'd do it again in a heartbeat

I'm greatful for the experience, and I can afford the payments. But my frustration is thinking about all the things I could do with the payment money. But whatever. I'll be back bitchin about it next month
