Oh, yes it is. I don't think many people recognize it.

Whoa there folks. I'm not anti Taco. Just bought my '16 after 113k on my '09. As I stated previously, the plug at THE BOTTOM of the center console is of limited use. Inverters and twin 2.5 amp USB plugs both need free air for cooling. Guess I could take everything out of there and leave the lid up. I work out of this truck, just like I did with my '09. Over the past few years I have come to rely on my cell phone, tablet, IR camera, laptop, DSLR camera, head lamp, bore scope, .... All of which need charging. And tell me why it makes sense to keep putting in a USB outlet that is this far out of date into a NEW UPDATED model. It's a small detail, but details stll matter.
Bottom line, I just need to put in the outlet. It's under $20 so not a big deal. I figured other folks might have their own ideas about what to use those blank plugs for so I thought I'd ask.
AND based on the fact that there is more than one of these offered on Amazon for Toyotas, it looks like I'm not the Lone Ranger here folks.
On more thing! MERRY CHRISTMAS everybody.

Toyota installs the "old" usb 2.0 becuase more people may have usb 2.0 devices and not usb3.0 devices. The usb is used for data transfer to head unit and charging. i for one as a marketer would sell the 2.0 first becuase people still have old phones and tablets. Making it more usefull.

This doesn't make any sense. USB 3.0 is backwards compatible.

Yeah that's bizarre, I can tell you with 100% certainty that the USB 3.0 standard is completely backwards compatible though.

I was going to keep the 2.0 plug for updating the display head and such. There are about 4 unused plugspaces on my dash. Figured folks would be using them for all sorts of mods, not just the USB 3.0 or even USB 3.1 which has more power still. Devices are supposed to negotiate ccharging rates with the charger and if not compatible will not charge. I think 3.1 will deliver up to 12v @ 10 amps or higher. Not certain what will use that much juice... Portable tanning booth?

I tried clicking on the Amazon link you posted but it didn't work. I'd like to look into this too.

WSPtaco, Don't know why the link is bad. Easy to find them on Amazon though. Just search for USB Toyota and I think you will find a couple. Just have to read the description carefully. Some are dual with 3.0/2.0 some are 1 charge & 1 data and the one I ordered is two charging ports with a 2 amp capacity.

I know some devices will accept either 2.0 or 3.0 but charge faster with the higher amps, but my tablet can be on a 2.0 overnight and still be dead in the morning. My phone will eventually take a charge but if I am running GPS and Google Maps it will still die when plugged into a 2.0 charger. Best reference I have found on this stuff is Wikipedia. No doubt there are many others but it was one that made sense to me.
