I had an AMC 73 CJ-5. It was a great vehicle. I had it for 15 years, and very little trouble, and it was great off-road. That AMC straight six had a lot of low end torque. I bought it new for $3500! Times have changed.

What a fun trip! Never camped in the snow but +1 on hammock camping. The first time I ever tried it was when an air mattress left me on the ground and had no other option. Now I prefer it to ground sleeping as long as it's warm enough. I'll have to look into getting an under quilt.

Underquilt and a rainfly makes it so comy. I was never cold in the hammock at night even at 0deg.

LOL, I was watching you get this ready on Facebook via the BDS feed. Didn't realize you were also on TW. Very nice looking truck and set up.

I feel dumb typing this but, do you still use the rainfly if it's not raining/snowing?

We typically get dew here in Michigan in the early morning of spring/summer, so I'm in the habit of using the rainfly all the time.

Stumbled across your video last night. A Great watch! It was cool seeing something different than the usual foo foo coffee sipping granola overlanding videos. Fun group you have there.

As a lifelong offroader, camper, and explorer; but being kinda new to this "overlanding" thing... it's not all just sous-vide and espresso on the side of a mountain is it?

Just collect patches and pack 2 weeks of supplies for a weekend trip and you're ready to overland

Hey Daryl - I noticed a few skinny tire rigs in the video. Just curious, how did they preform in the snow?

All the Jeep hate! I believe a little of it is rooted in the fact, that deep down, every Taco owner (like myself) knows Jeeps are more capable at many off road challenges than even the most built Taco will ever be.

Like it or not, the Tacoma is a “Swiss army knife”, and does a lot of things reasonably well (off-roading, light hauling, communiting, road tripping, light towing). Jeeps are more like meat-cleavers, purpose-built for a single job, and pretty much useless, or an ungainly hassle, for anything else.

You gotta give the folks at Fiat/Dodge/AMC/Kraft/Renault/North Korea, or whomever makes these things credit for sticking pretty close to the original form-factor and idea, at least in their flagship Wrangler.

Kinda related but I had my first Taco to Taco wave today. Another TRD Sport was coming the other way down a 1 lane road. He initiated with two fingers lifted off the steering wheel. I was caught off guard but raised my hand up (thumb tucked like a military salute, idk why) and did an air chop wave...best I could do at the moment.

    Felt really cool and Jeep-y.

I love my Tacoma, best truck I have ever owned, but when I want to go hardcore rockcrawling, etc., this is how I roll:
