Thanks! I wish I had documented a few more things, but I at least have pictures if something comes up later lol. I’m afraid the next “build” won’t be as intense. I’m going with most prefabbed goodies. Trying to spend less time in the garage. The SAS made the taco much less fun since it took so much effort mentally and physically and timewise. Was sick of looking at it.

Nice bondo on the diff, covering an even better welding job lol almost want to scrap this whole thing, but no idea what I’d do in its place as an upgrade that wouldn’t break the bank or timeframe. Guess I will rebuild it. They sell new weld on covers that I’ll handle, but I’m going to let a shop have fun with the seals, bearings and brakes.

I have no doubt they did the best they could. E for effort

so far that’s the most peckerheaded thing I’ve found, so I’m happy for that. Everything else looks pretty untouched besides normal replacement items.

I'm just so confused. What did they weld? Was it a caved in pumpkin that they repaired and then used whatever fiberglass/bondo chaos that is to try to make it look round again?

After I chipped off all the bondo there was a small booger welded place that looked like they had tried to cover a pinhole leak. Guessing they didn’t get it sealed good and then they tried a bit of jb weld and finally the bondo. I think the bondo was holding a bracket on too haha

Probably should have bought the whole thing haha would have been cheaper for sure. Fun to build them though.

I wasn’t going to ruin your fun saying that lol.

there was one for sale in PA with 35s, homemade +3.5 kit, 5.29s lockers etc.

got down to 5k but haven’t seen it reposted in a bit. Pretty crazy even for a trail rig.

Pulled the shafts and chunk out to inspect. Everything really doesn’t look bad. Those boogers extended half an inch into the diff. Not even sure how that’s possible but they definitely didn’t penetrate and are just loose haha. I think I’ll just patch it up and hold off of doing bearings etc. just brakes

@JTFisherman i just bought a bunch of stuff to redo my rear drum brakes/ebrakes without knowing how much the damn backing plates are. Mine are rotten out. Thinking about returning all of it and doing a rear disk brake conversion. Probably cheaper. Do you have any knowledge about those? Not seeing many kits out there, but it’s gotta be popular.

I don’t know shit about the drums but fuck that. If I ever have drum brake issues I’m going to a junkyard and getting different axle shafts with drums and everything and hoping they have ok life left lol.

Also don’t see much on converting these to disc brakes, most people will put in a different housing before going through the trouble and I would do the same. You could do a first gen sequoia axle like @cbechtold that comes with disc brakes and will match the width of the long travel.

I did find a kit way back to convert these rear axles to ff and add manual locking hubs with discs which seems cool, but I can’t find it now.

If you do price out a disc conversion, price out a cheaper ford 9” too, quick performance has some semi-float for silverados and you can do discs easy. Especially if you woudnt mind a spool, you can get a 5.29 35 spline third from quick for like 600$

Feck I’m really trying not to throw in a new axle, but it’s looking better and better. This one is rough. Half rotten, needs brakes, bearings, all that shit and that’s a special tool cost pressing those on, too. Starting to add up. Only benefit in keeping it is not having to figure out mounts for the three link kit and not figuring out a new driveshaft…really trying to not get carried away with this thing haha

You gotta have a junkyard close by or someone parting out a 4runner that has a rear axle. That’s what I would do if I were you. Probably look for an open one and get an arb since the elockers seem like they have strength issues.

I have 3 I know of in junkyards near me elocker and open but unfortunately no plans to come to bama soon.

There are a couple pull a part places an hour away. I’ve had terrible luck locally. Need to browse marketplace again.

Brake kit for this axle is $1k. Probably $500 in seals and bearings. $1800 to regear/ARB. Don’t know if I could build something else for that.

Stepped up my shop press game to tackle the rear bearings. Always let shops do the pressing of things, but figured what the hell why not buy more stuff I’ll rarely use. Rotten drum brakes will be replaced with disks. The conversion was almost the same amount as replacing the drums because the backing plates for 3rd gen 4Runners are apparently made of gold…
