Dead cat

My friend, "El Cheapo" has a 2007 4 cyl Tacoma. His cat failed where it "fragmented" (not melted) and restricted exhaust flow. He removed the cat and gutted the cat converter.

While the vehicle runs well, he complains of poor fuel economy.

Other than replacement, is there a recommended "fix" for running with out a cat?

 

I mean either replace it or you can do what I did with my s10 and hollow out the cat and on the rear o2 just space it out so you don’t have to see the check engine light
