Hi there just wondering how I would start my truck if the key FOB battery would die and I can't start my truck since my '17 has a push button.

I ran across a lady today and she had a newer Nissan Altima with key FOB and push button and I tried to help her but couldn't start her car.

There is no where to insert the key that pops out to open the doors Do you guys keep an extra battery on hand?

On most cars, there's a keyhole when you pull out the handle and enough juice in the battery to start the car. You do this by holding the fob right up to the start button. I've done this in my GS.

Look closely at the driver's door handle- remember the "one of these things is not like the others" song? Look closer at it...

Ok, so if your fob battery does die, simply hold the fob up to the push button and it will operate as the button will inductively power and activate the fob circuit, even without a battery in the fob.

If you bought your truck new, you should have a second fob. Read the Owens manual about setting the second fob into sleep mode to conserve the battery.

Thanks for the info. Didn't know it would start like that. Poor lady wish I would have known that she was freezing there and she said she just bought her car this week n the battery died!

No prob- I made the same mistake too! After looking at the other doors, and never using the key before, I stupidly posted a comment here on TW on another thread that my truck didn't have keyholes too! I just never really looked at the driver's door that closely. also, pretty cool that the fob still works without a battery - I'm sure that will save a lot of us here one day!

Sleep mode - see post #9 here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/keep-track-of-your-smart-key.402445/

Is there a way to start the truck if the key fob is damaged from getting wet?

I want to know the same thing. Everyone seems so concerned about the battery, I have spare batteries in the truck. What if I’m camping/hunting in the middle of nowhere and my keyfob is physically damaged? Don’t say carry my spare keyfob either, I know that.. just not keen on the fact that now they’re both susceptible to theft/loss. Toyota needs to address this!

Hahaha funny you mentioned that.. I was in the back woods in northern Wisconsin.. some how dropped my fob.. in water.. and didn't know it for a week .. yes it's on a belt clip.. the key was still hanging on the key ring.. but low and behold .. I could not get my truck started.. called Toyota.. said they need my truck at the nearest shop.. $545 tow... Plus purchase of new fob.. I said y'all had better fix this issue.. called my son 600 miles away at home .. overnight Express my other fob ..$45.... I now carry a separate fob purchased a third one and keep it in my lock box in the bed of my truck .

Good points are made about losing/destroying a key fob. Not defending the new push button keys, but remember if you lose/destroy the turn type key, you will still need a new one to be cut. And newer cars have chips in this fobs as well. So could be a similar story to losing one of these fancy new keys.

But I do prefer the old school key. Miss being able to reach in a fire up a vehicle without sitting in it and pressing the brake.
