Hi Guys - Quick question. Toyota notified me that they wanted to inspect my 2016 for possible 'excessive' frame rust.

I reviewed the frame myself and concluded the minor surface rust present would in Toyota not taking any action, which I was fine with.

To my surprise, while they agreed the frame was fine, they want to apply some form of additional coating.

Has anyone had this process completed? If yes, what specifically did the dealer do? I've always done my own frame rust repair. I'm debating on whether to let the dealer move forward or cancel the service.

They will apply some goop to the frame, add some plastic plugs to the frame and give you an extended warranty on the frame
(only if you have the treatment done).

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Having gone through this with my '06 TRD (full frame replacement), I never did ask what the "goop" was. Is it going to be a reputable rust resisting coating like Fluid Film or some unknown product?
I'd consider having done if nothing more than to get the extended frame warranty.

It looks like good stuff but they only apply it in VERY limited areas. If you want to keep your truck from rusting, I would advise you to spray everything with an oil or wax based product.

A local dealer does my annual PA inspection (they do it every year for free since they think I bought the truck there). They called a few days before it and said I have a recall on my frame, I was thinking WTH. They said they just install frame plugs. I asked about the goop treatment and they said it didn't need it since it's sprayed at the factory, which I doubt. Whichever the case they put in the plugs.

Interesting though, I'm seeing about 20 other places plugs could go in the frame, as well.

So 'goop' actually concerns me. It sounds thick, which can mean it will hide rust under it as you can't see the paint marbling from the rust underneath. I specifically asked the dealer if this was anything similar to an undercoating (which I won't accept) and they said no. But even a Rino liner or similar product (while great), needs the proper sub-surface prep.

I also suspect they will do no pre-work on the small areas of existing rust. I'm guessing they will apply this 'goop' directly over the rust. Like folks do with POR-15 and similar products. While this method can be positive for a few years, the underlying rust will continue to grow.

When I do rust work, all rust is 100% removed via grinding, media blasting, etc. Then I apply a POR-15 or similar product and add additional top coats for UV protection, etc.

If the dealer is going to slap a bunch of 'goop' over my existing minor surface rust, the only way they will apply goop is if I do all the pre-rust remediation first.

As for 'plugs', not sure where or how that is going to be beneficial on C-channel frame? On my jeep 'box' frame, I installed plugs myself.

Thanks for all your feedback, this has really helped :).

Searching for 'Toyota CRC treatment' is helping too. I'm finding photos, which is really alarming. Here's just 1 of many threads.

I really hope they don’t apply the CRC to our ‘17. The frame on my ‘06 went from being fine, having CRC applied, replaced two years later...

I did'nt want them touching my frame with that goop crap... it will do more damage than anything else. I avoided them altogether.. I did my own thing. Much more confident in my plan than theirs.

Same with my 06. I thought they would have this issue fixed by the 3rd generation. I just bought a 2021 TRD Pro, I hope this issue is fixed now.

Again, I'd like to thank everyone that shared their experiences. As a starting point, I'm going to do my own rust repairs then decide whether I see any value at all to their process. As it stands right now, I highly question whether their product application would have any quality value. Perhaps over a quality repaired surface, but even that is questionable.

If they apply the coating the warranty is extended in the frame. If not and you run into problems it’s on your dime

If you're really worried about it, do both. Clean and apply your own stuff, then go to the dealer and have the tsb performed to maintain warranty

They used to use CRC, but I believe they use something else now that is supposed to work better. I'm going to likely have mine done next time it is in for service. Here's why:

From my understanding they do a bit of prep work and stuff before applying it. There's also no reason you can't use Fluid Film over top of it for your own peace of mind.

If you don't get the service done, they will not back you if your frame rots outside of your normal warranty period. I believe you get a 10 year warranty on the frame if you get this done. That, alone, is worth it to me.

I used rp-342 cosmoline last year on my 2020...its a tacky wax based rust inhibitor bmw, mercedes, and the military use on their vehicles. After an inspection a year later....looks like i just did the job, no need to follow up. Imo, its far longer lasting than the fluid film i used to coat my tundra chassis every year with.

So how soon until the first 3rd gen breaks in half on a lift? I had my frame treated in October. I'm ocd about rust treatment and only area I've seen anything is the hitch and exhaust which are to be expected. Bolts all look new. Heavy salt area and I like to take the taco on the beach a lot.
