I bought my Tacoma in April. I did the 5k rotation myself because I was already rotating my wife's tires. I called for my 10k service at 9700 miles because I drive about 100 miles a day. Here's where it get's good. Because I didn't bring it in at 5k, though I did request a 10k service, they just performed a rotation. My wife brought in my truck for this service while I was at work. I thought everything was fine. I just went in for my 20k service this morning and the lady said that I am overdue for service and wanted to explain the situation. I was a little confused because I have 20,300 miles going in. She then stated I didn't get my 10k service! I asked her how that can be if I brought it in and she started going through the computer timeline. I told her it is common sense at 9700 to change the oil, but she kept going back to the damn 5k service I didn't bring it in for. She also proceeded to tell me the old service manager has been fired, but that is not my fault that he was incompetent. I requested another oil change at 30k free since they didn't perform the first and she kept arguing it. I plan on calling the manager on Monday.

tldr; I brought my truck in for 20k service and found out this is the first oil change.

This whole situation is ridiculous. This is the same dealership that wouldn't warranty my rust issue on my 2014 Tundra roof. I didn't buy the Tacoma there.

It's 1.5 hours to the next nearest dealer.

When you wife brought the truck home and you read through the service statement, did it say they changed the oil when they in fact didn't?

    all tore up already
dealers are garbage. i dont understand how their shops stay in business. i parking lot check over their work(or lack of) and every time my truck has had to go back in to do what they should have in the first place. my favorite was when i caught my dealer at 5k not changing my oil with the oil and filter i supplied. they just took it out of my truck. luckily my engine was dusty and it was evident the fill cap hadn't been removed. other constant battle is they write it up as a lube oil and filter but neglect to lube anything. takes about 10 sec to see if u joints were actually greased or not

Thats an extreme overreaction. Some suck, some are good. Just like independent shops vary.

When my wife's RAV4 needed tires, I shopped several places including Sams and Costco. The dealer nearby was actually the lowest priced. I was surprised. They're generally as good or better than the independents I've used.

The dealer near my work though? They suck.

Bed rug, ARE bed top, Weathertechs. Little goodies here and there!
At this point, think it'll be worth the drive for you. Probably why they provide crappie service too.

Local dealer here is outstanding. Can't say enough good things about them. So, yes there are good eggs out there.

And $35... plus dealing with disposing the oil... and it takes longer than 15 minutes.

For me, I have had crappy dealer experience from 3 separate dealers, no oil change from one, loose front lug nuts from another, added expenses for nothing from another. I'll stick by my comment. I'll not try another.

Your absolutely right about dealers. I go to the local dealer and they changed my oil at 5k, I worked there so I known the workers very well. But I hear about dealers around here and they suck bad. Sad to see people having to deal with dealers. We all with our vehicles should feel comfortable about any dealership. One time I worked on a car and the frames said Fresno Toyota and I talked to the customer she and her husband went to every dealer in Fresno area and got screwed over so they drove two hours to where I worked just to get a 20k service.

Plus the time to buy the oil & filter, plus the time to properly dispose of the old oil. (and double that fifteen minutes when you count in the setup and cleanup time)

a good independent tech is the deal fo sho. my last independent tech for my VW saved me literally THOUSANDS of bones simply by telling me what he saw while doing oil/lube services. he'd send me to my dealer who would pay for it under warranty. if he saw a drop of fluid crusting at the water pump gasket, he'd tell me, and i'd get a $1200 job done at the dealer under warranty. the dealer techs? they don't even try to look for stuff, and if they find it they have to report to their managers... not a good deal for the customer. get an independent and stick with him for the life of the vehicle.

It could be worse, I've been following a thread on 2nd Gen, the Dealer drained out oil but forgot to put new oil in.

This is why i change my own. So easy to change oil and know its done correct and actually done. My local dealer doenst have a observation window and there is no way to know what oil then put in or if the actually changed the filter. Ill spend the 30 min and get a little dirty any day before trusting to take care of my 37k truck that i plan to keep well after its paid off.

*shrug* Happens everywhere. I've seen oil trails leading out of the Express Oil Change near here from dropped filter or drain plug.

As to the no-oil thing, I have to wonder what idiot doesn't immediately turn off the motor when the low oil pressure light comes on.

OP. You just explained why a dealer only sees me for recall work or occasionally parts. A free oil change on a $35k truck isn't worth the aggregation you just went through.
