Nothing. It appeared to me negotiation was over at that point and the F&I guy (whom I had to talk to even though I was paying "cash", personal check they didn't want to put it on my credit card, that would have been epic bonus points) was trying to sell me overpriced stuff I didn't want.

Did you know they can't refuse your credit card as a payment option?

Some dealers in our area got in trouble for saying they would only allow "x amount" on cards. Now they can't set limits. If you want to put it all on a card, and your card supports that transaction, they have to take it.

Hello Points! If you could pull it off.

I paid for a car that way once with one of those promotional checks the CC company occasionally sends out. I don't remember the full details (APR, 0% timeframe, etc) as I paid it off as soon as the bill came but I do remember that the main part of the promotion was a full 5% towards my REI rebate. They don't send me those checks anymore...

Guarantee this isn't true. Tons of businesses deny/limit credit cards.

I didn't know they were required to take my credit card, too late for this truck. Where can I look this up for the future?

You can call your credit card company and ask them what contract they have with your dealership. There is no law about this. Every credit card company takes a small set price AND a percentange of every transaction you make with their card. The dealership has signed a contract with the credit card company that says they will not put a limit on how much you can put on a credit card. If they tell you there is a maximum, go outside and call your credit card company and tell them what they are doing. The contract will also say they cannot charge 3% more to use a credit card. These dealership rules against credit cards make the buyer not want to use a credit card at all which means the credit card company isn't going to make any money from the dealership or from you on interest

I would be interested in what credit card phone line says about the dealership putting a max on the credit card. Their contract says otherwise

This is categorically incorrect. There are no contracts between credit cards and dealers, nor pretty much any business.

MasterCard and VISA are networks that process payments. They have set fees (as a percentage). Banks issue cards and tack on their own set fees. The end result is 2-4% of a transaction is lost by the business.

Most car dealers won't (and shouldn't) absorb this hit. The ones that will allow credit cards normally only allow it for a small amount - say $2,000 - $5,000. This is not only to avoid the cc fees, but also to avoid the purchase protection credit cards offer. A few of the overly kind dealers have been burned bad by chargebacks when a person no longer wants the vehicle.

My wife just recently purchased a 2015 Nissan Rogue here in Ga. and they would only allow up to 5k on the CC.No extra fees included.

As everyone else has stated, you will be charged a percentage to cover the fees. Not worth it.

I bought a motorcycle last year for $9600. I was amazed (and happy) they would let me put the whole thing on my credit card. Many other motorcycle dealers wouldn't do this.

Correct, it's not worth it if I have to pay to use the CC it'd eat up the bonus points.

You could have negotiated a cash deal for less. This is what I do on big ticket items.

Nope. That was the price. It was already 40% off MSRP. I understand that they will still get less with cc purchase but that price was going nowhere.

CC fees are not fixed. As a long time wholesale/retail guy, I can tell you that larger enterprises and savvy ones who are members of national trade groups do not use the local banks or the named processors. Its an enormous industry and many average sized retailers take advantage of negotiated rates through groups that get them down into the 1.1-1.2% cc cost range. Its critical for them when over 90% of the sales are on CC in some buinesses.
