Had my 2019 Tacoma brought in for an oil change and to take a look at some codes that kept coming up. Got a call about 45 minutes later that they had run one of their 4 runners into the side of the truck. They assured me they would be taking care of it with their body shop but I'm skeptical about the diminished value and not sure how to proceed.

The drivers side rear quarter panel is completely bowed and really scratched. If anybody has had any experience with this I'm all ears.

Welcome to TW, sucks this has to be your first post.

I'd ask the dealership which shop they want to use and then look them up and see if that's the shop you'd want to use.

Call your insurance company and ask about a diminished value claim. Don't let the dealer sweet talk you into letting it go. And they better give you a loaner while yours is being worked on.

They said they will repair it and since its not a wreck there shouldn't be any documentation made that insurance/carfax will see.
Your owed a loaner or rental of course.

Diminished value is muddy in today's environment. Even with the repair, you can probably sell your truck now for more than what you paid for it...

Wait until the repair is complete and inspected to your satisfaction. Come back after a couple of days to talk to the dealer's used car mgr about trading it in. Talk to a couple more dealers in the area. The $ difference you get in offers is the diminished value.

How much do you want to bet the dealer will fix the new 4Runner and sell it as new without disclosing the repair?

I would agree. Not sure what value would be added to this issue by contacting any insurance agent. It seems as if it is well-documented already and they said they would fix it.

Looks very minor. I would prob let them fix it and just make sure its a good job. And get a loaner car

    Welcome to TW.

So luckily TN is a diminished value state.

I worked at a Toyota dealership and this happens a lot. It will with all the moving vehicles. It really doesn’t look bad (probably not to you) and it is in their best interests to do everything in their power to make it right with you.

In my experience, the OP insurance will not be involved in this incident at all. The diminished value claim will be with the dealer's insurance. The OP will typically need to provide that insurance a document from an "authorized party"...Toyota dealer, appraiser, etc. stating the value of the truck before and after the incident. Insurance will then make you an offer for diminished value. OP can then accept or counter...the diminished value $$ is a negotiated number between OP and the dealer insurance.

Sucks this happened but doesn’t look to bad. It’s a new Vehicle so it should be easy to paint it. If it was older, the paint won’t match perfectly cause old paint has some fade to it.

let them take care of it and ask for a loaner. Simple.

as far as the car loosing value. I’m on the fence. Yes it’s a car and we spend lots of money to buy it and want to make it last and look nice. But at the same time, it’s a car. It’s meant to get used. Rock chips will happen and door dings here and there. Can’t get too attached to the car.

You should be compensated for diminished value at the very least. Whether it's documented or not, on carfax or not. If the next buyer ask if there are any accidents or repairs done, that could be a turn off or pricing factor the buyer can use to ask for a lower price point. Why do you have to suffer from the value reduction in that case? And I'm sure Toyota employees would not recommend you to neglect that info or lie to the next buyer if they ever ask, just ask what you should do in that case and hear what they have to say. I'm sure they will try to make it less of a big deal to minimize their loss. But it's up to you, just my $0.02

Now is a good time to work a better deal than average on a new truck if you want to go that route. Maybe you can get a new truck before they get your old one fixed. Be civil, reasonable and suggest a solution to them.

If you think the value of a vehicle is not impacted by an accident repair...you are simply incorrect. Ask yourself...given all things equal on two exact vehicle...except one had accident repair, the other not...for the same price, which would you buy? 100% of people would buy the vehicle with no accident repair.

I'd say, tell them to give you the 4Runner straight up, and you'll deal with repairing both on your own dime.
