How in the hell does this happen with back up cameras today?? What kind of idiot did they have driving that 4Runner? Sorry to see this happen to your truck. It’s not major damage but I would still be furious.

I 100% would let my insurance deal with the dealership and get it repaired elsewhere to your hearts content.

I’d be concerned about night turnover rates where managers change and all that supposed good will goes right out with them.

What do you think would happen if you hit a dealership vehicle?

This is not hypothetical. Vehicles that have been repaired are valued lower. Often with good reason. That lowers your real equity in the vehicle. They are required to make it right with the owner just like any other accident.

Like others said, with market value being higher than what you paid… you have zero chance on getting anything out of a diminished value claim.

It's just a bedside which is about $800 for the part plus paint and labor to unbolt the old one and bolt on the new one and re-install the tail light, gas filler tube and the brace on the front of the bed side that attaches to the composite bed.

Good luck if you decide to pursue the claim.

I'd just raise hell with the dealer ship and have them give you several years or dollar limit on ordering Toyota OEM parts at significant discount, which they will still make money from. Win-win for both of you.

Hmmm, sounds like it wouldn’t be something that would bother you? If the dealer asked you if he can have one of his guys back into your truck just like happened here so he could use it to train his body guys your telling me so long as they do a great job and give you a loaner you would do it? You aren’t going to convince me on that. Sorry.

The main question is that did they change the oil? Perhaps, the crash was a bit distractive.

The accident has already happened and the damage is done. They will fix it for you on their dime. Inspect the work. If it’s satisfactory, just move on.

Accidents happen. It’s no big deal. But triggers trust issues for sure. I just don’t trust strangers with my stuff, and why would you?

Make sure to do your due diligence inspecting the repairs. Sometimes they forget clips, or re-use the olds ones, or the paint doesn’t quite match. Talk their body shop and make a good report with them. But hold them to high standards when they say it’s done.

You better check your filter. They probably over torqued it.

I think the biggest thing here is as many have said to inspect the work. But you need to make sure you look at the panel in different lighting, from different angles. When a panel is repainted it might not match depending on how your looking at it. Its not so bad when they blend paint, but when its panel to panel you can see the difference.

Firing squad? No clue. Took to google but didn't see much.

I'd wager legally they'd be entitled to be "made whole" or whatever, but again I'm not sure how you quantify the "it might get reported, and someone might buy it, and that someone might pay less because of the cosmetic repair" part of whole.

Whatever that number is it should probably be weighed against future rapport with the dealership and time/energy invested in chasing it down. Maybe some math nerd at the insurance company knows what that number is but to me its small enough to not be worth the time and energy (also subjective I suppose).

Might as well try to get compensated for your troubles. I'd go find the 3 most expensive body shops in town and have them write you a thorough estimate. Present that to the dealer in addition to rental costs. Then ask them for a check. See if they bite.

So it depends on the dealer on what happens if you hit one of their cars. Many times the dealer will fix the damage without going insurance (if its minor) because the car will be worth less with damage on the carfax than it costs to repair. They also pay much less for body work with their own body shops. So if there is $2k worth of damage, they will pay their body shop $1k to repair it, then list the car as normal. If they went to insurance then the carfax may result in a 2-3k loss.

appreciate the info, any idea what the consequences to the consumer/at-fault-party are? seems like in an eye-for-an-eye scenario here we'd expect the dealership to come at us for the full cost of repairs and then some (for the diminished value a potential customer might negotiate off the sale having learned of the damage).

Its not worth their time. The car needs to be fixed and on the lot to sell asap. If the car is getting estimates, waiting on authorization, waiting for the insurance companies to fight over who pays, its missed sales.

I've bought one for a work truck. Got a "new" f150 about $4800 off of what a non-repaired was. Some dude had too many beers and hit 3 or 4 vehicles in the lot. My guess is that his insurance paid the difference after repair.
