Had an odd call from the local dealership tonight- they said that used inventories are low and they would like to offer to buy my 2018 OR. Trade in value is at record levels they said I scheduled something for a couple weeks from now to get an appraisal. They would have to give me an absolute steal of an offer for me to act on it, it I figured it was worth getting an appraisal. I’ll do it after work on a Friday so it won’t bother me haha.

Has anyone else had a dealer reach out like this? Nothing I’ve heard of before.

I mean probably another Tacoma would be the replacement for me. I get that there are shortages, but just seemed like a weird call. What are the odds that they offer me something that isn’t just gouging me to buy a new truck?

I work in the electrical supply industry, well aware of the crazy shortages. It’s only getting worse, that’s for sure.

My dealer reached out to me about buying my taco back too.

I'm a bit curious, but not interested in selling back.

Hopefully they give you a killer deal but it sounds more like the normal bs dealership gimmick just to get you in the door.

I am mostly curious as well, just decided to go far enough to see what they actually offer. Who knows, it might be worth it - worst that can happen is I waste a half hour.

Yeah that’s what I think too. Being in sales, I have a bit of a soft spot sometimes haha but I’ll see what kind of deal they want to give me

Yeah if a car is going through service and sales is interested they will inquire if the customer is interested in trading it in.
New cars are less available, thus used car prices have drastically increased, I almost bought a trade in at my dealer but decided to wait 2-3 years when I will actually need it when prices are lower again. I assume limited new vehicle availability has to do with covid-19 screwing up the international assemble line. For example my dealer(ford) might have 30 new vehicles in stock right now, normally we have at least 200 new vehicles stock.

I bought mine just a couple months ago, so I’m sure I wouldn’t be in the same situation as you. But still worth a check I guess

Go prepared with a Carvana and/or Carmax offer in hand and see if they match that.

Not odd at at all with 4 month-ish delivery times, lines down due to chip and parts shortages etc. I waited 4 months for mine (allocation confirmed Dec 23 & delivered April 03). The value they offered us for our 2012 outback trade-in was $2500 more than my top-end FMV estimate. Even more strange was that they committed to the purchase price of the truck, the dealer adds and the trade-in with $0 down and only commitment by email, text (texted them photos of the outback) and by phone. No in person visit or scrutiny of the outback. They honoured the Dec prices even though MSRP and exchange rate took a hit during the 4 months. Wasn't at all sure what could expect when we showed up at the dealership for a prepurchase test drive (our first Tacoma) or on purchase day 5 days later (after the dealer installs we wanted were done). No deviation, no up-sell, no hard-sell on crap we didn't want etc. Very surreal.

Neighbour across the street has a 3.5 year-old F150 and his dealer has called him a few times. They want his truck for $ but can't offer him a comparable replacement/newer model. Cars, real-estate and skilled labour shortages have been and continue to be nuts....

Make them give you a cash number, not a trade number. Only a cash number is real. Trade is a shell and pea game that's in their favor.

And yes, I get contacted regularly about 'low inventory'. Not for my poor little 5 lug though, 'cause they are no longer a thing. For my RAV.

While inventories are unusually impacted right now, it's still just a sales ploy.

    This!

think about it- if Carvana and others will use info to appraise (and just confirm condition on pickup) then why can't the dealer?
They want you to come in for a reason. I'd be asking for an offer, or I'll spend my time elsewhere,,, things have changed, but they don't want them to for a reason.
