Over the past few months my right rear brake light hasn't been working. The blinker works, but when I apply the breaks with the blinker on, it blinks twice as fast. So when I dropped the truck off to the dealership today for an oil change and to have them look at it, they told me that both taillights have cracks in them that allowed water to seep in and fried the entire light.

Does this make any sense to anyone? Because it doesn't to me. If the entire light was fried, why would it still somewhat work? They also said the other taillight has a crack and needs to be replaced also, even though it still works fine.

Is the dealership just trying to sucker me in, or could this be possible?
I'd hate yo have to cough up the $600 they quoted the two new lights at.

    What should I do???

$600??? are they insane?? if the cracks are big i guess water may have gotten in there, i would check the wires myself, something may be shorting out. if it's a short, that's like a $5

If you look at your lights is their water in them or are they foggy. I have seen tail lights filled to the top with some bulbs that still work.

I cracked one of my tail lights a while back. Best thing that could have happen. I picked up a pair of blacked out replacements for around $100. Direct replacement. Took about 10 minutes. And they look a lot nicer then the stock. And are certainly nicer then the $600 ones from the stealer.

Well, dusting off the old CET... When two lamps are wired in parallel on the same DC circuit the loss of one will cause an increase in amperage through the circuit. This increased amperage, in turn, causes the thermal flasher to heat up and break the circuit faster.

Edit: Googling it I find that the pre-LED Tacoma taillight assembly runs about 70 bucks if you buy it aftermarket.

Check to see that you have the correct bulbs installed.
I made that mistake before and weird things happened.
Actually it was my friend's mistake. He picked up the bulbs. :smack:

I suppose you have an '09+? If so, I am currently selling a passenger side tail light that came off of an '09. Much cheaper than what the dealer charges. I guess $600 is with installation. PM me for more info.
