I’ve started getting a chirp when I drive so I took it in to the dealership. They told me the belt is glazed and the pulleys are going out at only 22k miles. They want $750 to replace all of the idler pulleys and belt, which seems to only cost around $350 in parts. Am I being scammed here? I don’t have a way to install the parts myself so i would have to pay someone to do it but $750 seems really steep

Ask for what the book time is on the job.
At $350 in parts, and $120 and hour, I can see the job being 3 hours, but I don’t know.

EDIT: I just reread, yeah, at 22k I highly doubt either are bad.

1...spray wd 40 on the belt with eng off , better on the part that touches the pulleys, then close hood before you start it so it wont sling,
2...but yours is almost 5 so could be dried out belt but try a new belt before replacing pulleys

Mine was doing the chirp when I started it up, told the service advisor when I was getting my oil changed. So I had him replace my belt and all is good and I have a little over 83xxx on my 17.

Serpentine belt part number 90916-A2037 ; about $56 online.
Plenty of YouTube videos showing how to replace. Pulley's are probably fine. :notsure:

Replace the belt. No way pulley/tensioner bearings should be going out this early.

Here to put in another "inspect and replace the belt, preferably yourself" comment like everyone else in the thread.

Can they show you how the belt is "glazed"? Never heard of a belt failing that way.

Lower idler replacement requires unbolting the oil cooler from the engine. If you go through deep water or mud, that'll be the first to go.

My truck had around 30-40k miles on it when same thing happen to me after a trip out to Death Valley. Dealership wanted to charge around the same because you had to buy everything as a kit. Not individual parts. Went to the parts department and salesman was shocked to hear what happen. Ended up pressure washing and just cleaning everything up real good. 60k miles later no issues.

They never showed me anything. Just made me wait for almost 2 hours and told me that the pulleys and belt were making noise and that it needs replacement.

Deepest water I’ve been through probably a foot, been through like 2 feet of snow so neither should have reached the pulley. Regardless I agree with everyone else, the pulleys should be fine. There’s no way all 3 went out at once

If you try to squeak life out of a dying belt by spraying WD-40 on it (the can costs as much as the belt) then just step away from the tools.

Why would you want to lubricate a slipping belt?

Just in case the pulley is seized and you need the belt to slide over it, obviously.

I kid, I kid.....take the belt off, inspect the belt, spin the tensioners and accessory pullies, eyeball everything else, replace or come up with a plan for whatever's needed.

$750 for a belt at 22k, find a better mechanic.

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

A noisy belt I can believe, "all" the idlers being bad at 22K I can't.

Any reputable independent shop can change the belt for you in less than a 1/2 hour.

A Gates or Dayco brand belt is around $40 at any parts house if you want to try it yourself.

Personally I don't believe spraying anything on the belt is the correct way to proceed. Good belts are quiet and bad ones are noisy.
Even if you make a bad one quiet you don't make it good.

F that. Seems weird that the idler pulleys would go that soon. Like others mentioned i would just replace the belt itself first. Its a cheap enough part and easy enough job to do yourself with little knowledge.

i went by this video and swapped mine out in about 15 mins with a breaker bar and 14mm, or and independent shop can do the same.

I'd start with a new belt first and go from there.
