I'm looking to do the deck plate mod on my '98 2.7l, but I don't know if it'll pass the smog check with my air intake modded. I would by another stock air intake box to put on for a smog test but they're pretty pricey.

Does anyone have experiences with the deck plate mod and smog tests?

What are you worried about? Technically even a aftermarket intake needs to have an E-code. Though seriously any smog tech that hassles you about a CAI that doesn't alter the stock MAF or anything past it is either being a dick or is on probation already and is afraid he's being monitored.

So just do it. It won't be an issue.

If you have the same smog guy that you go to, and feel comfortable asking him, then just ask him. If not, then go to a few different smog shops and get a few different answers. Whichever one says yes then go to him when it's smog time

Just put the deck lid on during the smog test. It returns the air box performance back to stock.

I know California is super anal about everything. I thought modifying your intake/exhaust system would be against some rule or regulation.

For real, you can be fined for collecting rain water out here. It's state property (seriously)

Nope (quoted from google, bold letters are from the search keywords)

"This new law was made so that California could better meet its “20×2020 goal.” The goal is to reduce the state's potable water demand by at least 20 percent by 2020. Before the Rainwater Capture Act of 2012, residents could only collect rainwater if they received a permit from the SWRCB."

Dear god. That is the most ridiculous law I have ever heard in my life.

To answer your question, you'll probably be fine with the deckplate mod but there's a chance you could run into a smog tech that has an issue with it. Just go to another smog station if that happens.

Its called "failing the visual" If the tech sees that its not original, you flunk. Its your gamble.

With that said, the gains for the deck plate mod are fictional. You won't be able to tell if you have extra power compared to an unaltered air box. It just sounds different and fools you into thinking it has more power.

The choke point is not the air box, its the throttle body.

There are many here that have failed the visual because of modified air boxes. They had to put up "wanted to buy" adds to get an uncut air box.

Eh. I know there's really no horsepower gain. I just hate how quiet the engine is.
My friend's '95 Corolla sounds like a damn Lamborghini and everything is stock. It's also a 1.6l.

Then it all comes down to if the smog guy wants to be a dick. I don't think any of us can answer that question.

I failed visual 3 times with a legal intake. Showed the manufacture website with smog legal info on my phone. All 3 refused to smog it. Had to get a new carb sticker sent from the company to pass. If I wanted sound I would just put a $20 cone filter on the end of the tube. Then reinstall the box if questioned. My civic had the k&n cone on stock tubing and passed because the k&n had a carb sticker.

Yeah the CARB sticker is a must have if you do any performance add-ons. I've heard of guys getting turned away/failing the visual with the TRD supercharger because they didn't have the sticker under the hood, even though it's well-known that the TRD s/c is carb certified. CA testing is a bitch, I'm really not looking forward to having to do it next year.

The one tech tried to look up the part but my intake has a stock number only. No stamped part number. That why I don't smog the offroad truck. It's a mess.

The liberal Bolshevik communists that run this state have ruled that CO2 is a greenhouse gas. Humans exhale CO2. Your life giving breath is now a global warming greenhouse gas, subject to regulation by the CARB. So why are you still breathing? Why do you hate the planet and the delta smelt so much?
