2019 Tacoma, recently crossed 20k miles. Termed out of my dealers free oil changes so I started doing it myself.

Problem is the dealer over tightened the oil filter and we were unable to get it off. My brother who was doing the work for me while I was on a work trip out new oil but couldn't change the filter.

I was in the middle of a movie so it's been a couple weeks since the oil change. Finally on the other end and my dealer can't take me in until either a weekday (which is difficult for me with work) or until next weekend..

What damage (if any) am I doing to my car. Should I make it priority to go in Tuesday to get my oil changed or wait until the following Saturday when I can get a decent appointment? For reference I MAY drive to run errands and what not over the weekend but otherwise it will sit (I work from home and dealer is a ways away closer to where I used to live). I've driven a couple hundred to a few hundred miles during my move since the oil (but not filter) was changed.

You are good, but take to a Jiffy Lube or local oil change shop and they’ll get it off for free. Had the same issue just this week and was no problem to resolve.

How many miles on the filter?
My GF’s 4R had the same issue, but had 5k on the oil and filter, so I’ll just wait another 3-4k since they really only suggest 10k intervals. Not ideal, but I’m not gonna dump fresh oil just this one time.
I could pound someone’s think-bump for over tightening it.

Do you guys not have the correct housing wrench to get the filter off? If you do, not sure why you can't unscrew the housing. Just put a breaker bar on there. 10k intervals are the MAX service for light duty use, like driving 20 miles on the freeway to work and back. If you drive stop/go, in the heat, in the hills or do any sort of hauling or towing, 5k or 6 months if you love your truck.

But, if I had to choose, I'd rather have a more well used filter than dirty, broken down oil.

Expert's take on oil change interval:

If you got the 6 cylinder with the paper oil filter it will only dump 0.2 quarts oil when you change the filter. So take it to a shop bring the oil you used and the filter you want to use and they’ll get ya sorted.

Yeah try that with a cheater bar, honestly those damn filters just get pressurized and like to tighten themselves a little.

Had the same issue with mine after the free oil changes. With the correct filter wrench and a 3/8 breaker bar it was a struggle… i don’t know how they didn’t break the filter housing. Once I finally got it off, I tried to remove the drain plug from the housing and it had to be well over 100 ft lbs. fairly certain they put it back on with an impact

after that.. I did everything myself. Was planning to anyway but figured id use the 2 freebies.. skipped that with my tundra and just did those myself.

I didn't use this exact one but I did have one of these adapters. It snapped!

The cheap ones do that, the motivx is well designed and shouldn't snap.

Shit, well yeah then Jiffy Lube it is so that if you break something then your not responsible. Also try calling the dealership so they have a file of the issue incase the plastic housing gets warped or worse.

Ugh why did they change it? The older one is so much better that will grip the little slots. Works way better if they get over tightened… I’ve had the ones that don’t bind together with the housing and then it’s a PITA to get them separated

Griping with the little slots tended to break the filter housing.

Another reason I changed to the aluminum housing from the plastic one..

yep they do break the housing. I purchased a used Rav4 from a dealer and the first oil change I tried could not get the filter off. I used the regular motivx tool with the slots and got the filter out but broke the filter housing. Ended up buying the new motivx tool and works like a charm. (also upgraded the housing to the aluminum one).

Whatever you do, be prepared to buy another housing. They sometimes break upon removal.
