Not a good option on a 3g v6 which is what OP is describing

I did watch, still not sure what it has to do with this thread or tacomas in general.

Thanks, I work from home so a majority of the time my truck is just parked. I do some light driving in the evenings to take my dog down to the park or on the weekend to run a couple errands. I ordered that MotiveTools wrench everyone seems to recommend and took it to the dealer today to at the very least losen it up and make sure it truely wasn't over torqued. And might just be the seal from heat cycles guys say. And once that comes in I'll change the filter and top off a couple cups of oil for what spills out.

Agreed, the consensus I am getting is that this isn't an urgent thing but something I need to get done..

I don't drive often as I work from home so right now most driving has been down to the park for a dog walk and some light driving to run errands. Oil is clean and am changing the filter as soon as my wrench comes in..I did have one but I guess it was cheap Chinese metal. Snapped on us as we were using is and that's how I ended up in this situation..

I ordered the wrench that lost guys on here are recommending and It should arrive by Thursday

I had this same issue back in January. I changed my oil at 5000 miles previously and had dealer do the free one at 10,000. Then at 15,000 went to to it myself again and couldn't get the filter cap off with the older style motivX filter wrench and a socket.
Since I don't have a garage to work in and it got too cold to get back to it I just left it go with the old filter and new oil.
I had my 20,000 mile service done early at 18,000 miles to get it in before the 2 year Toyota care expired, so they changed it all again then. I doubt it mattered. I had new oil and I doubt the filter was clogged in 8,000 miles total when Toyota says 10,000 is OK.
I got the newer style motivX filter wrench, actually got the full kit this time. Got a 24" long, 1/2" drive breaker bar, 1/2" drive rachet and the metal filter cap on hand incase now that Toyota care is over. I won't over tighen it next time and I'll most likely be the only one to touch it as long as I'm able to do it myself.

No need to have that breaker bar. Its not like your removing those brake caliber mounting bolts.

Maybe not but I had it from removing overtorqued lug nuts and would only use it as last resort.
Who knows how the heck they tightened it the last service. Definitely you would need to be careful using a breaker bar as you will transfer considerably more power than with a normal 1/2 rachet.

Wow! This seems to be something dealers do a lot huh? The service manager even said over the phone "sometimes our guys over tighten it but we can always get it off" like gee glad you know you're guys are not doing things to spec and just let it slide!

Thanks for the story though, a lot of the guys here telling me same thing happened is making me feel a lot less worried. Like you, I have all new oil and doubt the filter is in TERRIBLE shape.

Yeah it seems all too common this isn't the first and probably not the last thread about the filter being too tight.
I know when I changed the oil at 5,000 miles the thing came off easily. That tells me it was done differently when installed at the factory vs later at the service department.
It's interesting that your dealership admitted sometimes they over tighten. I asked about the specs they followed last time I was there and the service advisor said, the reason people can't get them off at home is a difference in the leverage they have with the car on a lift vs home do it yourself person on the ground under the truck is why its harder to remove.
Maybe to an extent especially if over tightened. I don't buy that 100% because in the next breath he wanted the sell me a prepaid maintenance plan.

Little trick for overtightened filters… Put a floor jack under the breaker bar and pinch it between the jack and the filter. Start jacking it up so some of the weight of the truck is on the breaker bar to keep the filter wrench from slipping off. Obviously don’t put the full weight of the truck on it, but just enough to give it the grip it needs to crack it loose. Had to do this after my last dealer service. The new hires and entry level employees they have doing oil changes at most dealerships are often morons who don’t know and don’t care.

Thanks I will have to remember that. It's clever and would be easy with the truck raised on ramps I use.

You are right. A mechanic that turns wrenches with a go pro knows more about cars than the people that make them.

Sounds like an even better way to crack these composite housings if not extremely careful. Imo, that doesn't sound real smart for some either.
