Delta between TRD Off-road vs TRD Sport?

    I am curious...what EXACTLY is the difference between the two? Other than obvious visual cues such as the hood, the painted bumper and grill (which I don't understand ONE bit. No offense to the Sport owners but, why would you pay extra money, in essence, to de-chrome something? To each their own I guess). The Off road package was significantly more expensive and so I was wondering what the "Sport" guys (and gals...Ldytaco) don't get? And do they get anything else other than the previously mentioned items?

    Other than the obvious exterior differences you've mentioned, not much that I can remember. I think the seats may be slightly different (sport seat?). Also, the I think the sport has 17" wheels where the off-road has 16's. Another difference is in the rear diff. The sport has a limited-slip differential but the off-road model has a locker. Is the down hill/up hill assist standard on the off-road models? (I don't remember the exact terminology)

    Here's the scoop from Toyota's website:

    TRD Off-Road Package (OC) -- SR5 Package #2 plus off-road tuned suspension with Bilstein® shocks, 16-in. alloy wheels with P265/70R16 BFGoodrich® Rugged Trail T/A tires, locking rear differential, engine skidplate and fuel tank protector, front tow hook, 115V/400-watt deck mounted power outlet, multi-function overhead console with compass and temperature gauge, sport seats with sport fabric and driver's lumbar support, and TRD Off-Road graphics (V6 models)
    TRD Sport Package #1 (PY) -- Sport suspension with Bilstein® shocks, 17-in. alloy wheels with P265/65R17 tires, limited-slip rear differential, 115V/400-watt deck-mounted power outlet, fog lamps, power windows/door locks/outside mirrors, remote keyless entry system, cruise control, variable intermittent windshield wipers, multi-function overhead console with compass and outside temperature gauge, color-keyed grille surround/bumpers/mirrors/door handles/overfenders, sliding rear window with privacy glass, sport seats with driver’s lumbar support and sport fabric trim, metallic-tone instrument panel trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, sun visors with sliding extensions and vanity mirror, hood scoop, and TRD Sport graphics (V6 models)

    Although it appears that you get alot more from the sport package, I noticed the off-road models I test drove had many of the same features that aren't listed as part of the package.

    You're right, the Off-road package does NOT list all of the items it comes with as it does in the Sport Package. So far, as differences I see;

    1. Color keyed grill, bumper, mirrors, door handles
    2. Scooped hood (non-functional)
    3. Limited-sllp differential

    and of course, the graphics. All other items listed come with the Off road package. Did I miss something?

    I think that about covers it. Except for the wheels, the sport rolls on 17's, the off road on 16's. ( If that matters to ya)

    How much was the off-road package? I got a reference and got the sport option almost no charge. There are some off-road features I would have liked.

    Also, have you messed with your intake at all? Exhaust?

    the off road has better shocks than the sport. so if ya wanna off road thats the better package to get. but i like the sport thats what i have i love it. but i dont off road it im still takin it easy 554 a month is a little high of a payment to off road. shes my baby though so i dont want to scratch it. i know i know its a truck thats what its used for but im a baby so no off road for me for now

    ya you are absolutely right! I have never taken MY truck off roading because it is a prerunner....a couple of my friends have old jeep with bithin 4x4 rigs...i really want to get out there!

    i can't do any rock crawling or mud pits with a 2wd tacoma...i'm happy it's paid off and now i can start adding mods to it, i wish i wouldve been into this earlier....does it make any sense for me to add a lift kit and tires for ground clearance even if i'm not hardcore offroading?? besides doing it for looks.

    The off-road does not have better shocks it has differntly tunes shocks, that are exactly the same

    I must concur...it doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Personally, it bothers me when I see a truck with some ridiculous lift with chromed out shocks, struts, crossbars, rims and any other ancillary components. WHY??? It's like installing LCD screens behind the headrests - including the REAR seats and cruising down the road when you have NO friends or going to the gym to socialize or putting on makeup when you're ugly. Okay, that last one wasn't nice but you get the point. You said it was paid off? I would trade it in on a 4x4 if it means that much to you.

    nah....if i want to offroad...no way i'm taken a $23,000 truck out there....and i never understood guys spending 2-3G's on a lift.....i'm talkin about maybe 2" maybe spacers and bigger tires....because i do use this in the desert.......i'm still more of a drag strip guy

    i've got the sports car covered....'96 z28 383 87 grand national (if you have a chance to ride in one of these...take it) the 87 still smells brand new!

    So which is it, you said previously you wanted to do some minor off-roading with your two wheel drive and thats why you were wondering if it were worth it to put a lift into it. Now you do not want to lift it or use it for of-roading because it is too expensive. And you hate guys like me for putting in a three inch lift into my brand new taco. Well I have a three inch lift and I use my truck off-road almost everyday travelling through some of the most hell country in western canada for the forestry and oil industry, does that mean I wasted my money? I will tell you what you should do, you should put a three inch lift into your two wheel drive, put some 20 inch rims on it and take down to the drag strip to see what she can do. I hope they laugh you all the way home.

    easy there hoss, I don't believe i EVER used the word hate...i'm not a hater....tacoking said it bothers him to see big lifts on trucks that don't need it...and i was agreeing, saying I don't understand expensive kits when it isn't necessary...HOWEVER, if that is what they choose to do with their money, so be it.

    Keep in mind natrlyst that we all come from differing terrains. You have the urban suburbs, urban metropolis', rural country, rural desert and all the gray in between. Hardcore means a little something different to each owner. I am sure we can write back and forth telling tall tales with an increased font about who's is bigger but what's that gonna prove? Only that MINE IS THE BIGGEST! J/K. Couldn't resist. Anyway, I think rockn06sport was making sense and his question was/is one that 4x4ers may scoff at but he lives in the OC and being born and bred there I can tell you that there isn't a whole lotta need to ever shift your transfer case. But some guys like lifts and kits to give an offroad, rugged feel. Hell, that's exactly the target demographic for the Prerunner.
    BTW, I'd love to take my truck out on some of that rugged terrain Western Canada has to offer...I live on the beach and it's mostly sand riding and pine trails for us.
