I use my '06 DC TRD Sport for off road geologic work in the mountains of Nevada. I have had it in some pretty tight places, steep climbs and leans. It has done very well. I put on BFG Rugged Trail on the 17" rims. Tacos are great off road.

And when it is out of the mountains on days off, she cleans up and is the Sport she is. I hate the Nevada pin stripes (scratches on the side) but I believe the TRD Sport can give the best of both worlds.

I am new to this site and must the information and feed back in order to help the new guys is fantastic Thank you all

Ordered a new 2011 4x4 White Double Cab with SR5 Extra value Package was disappointed I could not get the TRD off road package installed because I wanted the Tan interior. Out of 971 trucks that will be built in Baja Calif by the end October there was only one being built with the tan interior.

Has any one added the some of the TRD options after the fact, temp console, 115 power outlet in the bed.

A-TRAC is the most important feature of the Off Road TRD... Too bad you can't add it!

i have a tuck i built with a 9" of lift and all the horse power to chirp the tires going to second gear automatic tranny. I like to drive it but its just personal preference. i like all trucks big, small, fast, slow, new or old. I like to read the 4x4 mags and show trucks get ridiculous, its like an art what can you do to your rig.

I am about to buy 2011 Tacoma TRD 4x4, but I am stuck on offroad or sport.
When i test drove the sport it handled awesome like a car. the offroad seem heavy inthe frount or just stiffer.
My question is does the tacoma trd offroad have steering stabalizers, to make the steering stiffer than the trd sport???

the only differences in suspension between the OR and the sport are:

#1) progressive rate coils on the OR vs. standard on the sport
#2) both have front sway bars, but the sport's is supposed to be slightly larger.

The suspension is tuned different to accomidate off-road travel over road travel. It's the same though, and most enthusiests will ditch he stock suspension anyway be it TRD or SR5 to gain some lift and a better ride.

The Off-Road is superior in terms of 'toys.' Rear locker and A-TRAC, DAC or Clutch-start-cancel. The sport's only advantage is visuals (color matched grill/mirrors/handles/rear bumper/sport hood with fake hood scoop). It does not have a rear locker or a-trac on 09+. There is no mechancical LSD on the sports anymore (it's only advanatage 05-08), both Off-Road and sport use Auto-LSD (brake controlled LSD instead of the tried and true clutch type LSD).

So, if you just want solid looks off the lot, go sport. If you want off-road performance off the lot, go off-road. You can color match stuff pretty easily. You can get the rear bumper painted, and get the rest of the panels you need for about $5-600 at the dealer. To get a rear locker (and you still have no front traction from a-trac), it will run you about $1200 for an aftermarket ARB. The ARB does have advantages over the stock e-locker though... but both do very well.

Either way, with mods or even stock, both trucks are absolutely epic. I do honestly feel you get more bang for the buck on an off-road though.

so basically i can take my trd sport 4x4 change the shocks and it will be offroad without a locker but if i have 4x4 do i need a locker?

only really need a locker if you do the stuff to use it on. the TRD OR and sport shocks are the same. it is the coil springs that are different...and the sway bar.

so a sport 4x4 is better than an offroad prerunner

I'd say so I'd definitely rather have 4wd than 2wd and a locker. Not that the prerunners aren't plenty capable. Besides, you can always add in an aftermarket locker if you find yourself off roading in situations where you could have really used one. I don't do a lot of off roading myself other than mild trails and sand and using the 4wd for snow. I preferred the hood and colored keyed items in the Sport. I see the OP 4 years ago talked about paying to "de-chrome" something. I hate chrome myself and had I gotten an OR would have gotten rid of all the chrome stuff anyways. Some people still view chrome as an upgrade. I'm not one of them.
