Detroit True Trac / Suspension

    Does anyone have a Detroit truetrac installed? If you do, can you tell me if it is worth getting one. I am looking to add more traction to the rear of my Tacoma when pulling my boat out of the ramp. I lost traction the other day and that was recommended. I have a 2004 SR5 Pre Runner 3.4 dbl cab. I also had my truck in for routine maintenance at Tires Plus. They tried to sell me new shocks and struts. I have 68k on the truck. Do they need to be replaced at that mileage? I haven't noticed any ride issues with the suspension that would cause me to think I need to replace them.

    i currently have the factory electric locker in my tacoma but i ran a tru trac in my old jeep cherokee and it worked really well for a daily driver but to install it you have to re setup the gears since its a different carrier but if you got a lock right lunch box style locker you wouldnt have to mess with ring and pinion,hopefully some 1 else will chime in

    I have been looking in to the powertrax. It seems like it would be an easier install the than the Detroit. Trying not to get too crazy with changing and adding stuff to the truck.

    lunch box style lockers are a walk in the parkto install compared to setting up the gears imo,only need basic hand tools and a little common sense

    I'm in a similar position. I have a 2003 Xtra-Cab PreRunner SR5 (non-TRD) and am looking to replace my open diff with a True Trac. I've done my research and have my mind set on the True Trac. It seems to be the perfect fit for the way my truck is used.

    Are you planning to do the install or have the shop do it. I'm planning to do mine, so am anxious to see this thread develop.

    ARP Head Studs, Ported Head, MLS Head Gasket, GT3076R Garrett BB Turbo, Synapse Tubular SS Exhaust Manifold, PSI Forward Facing Sheet Metal Intake, Intercooler, 550cc injectors,255lph Fuel Pump, Speed-Trac Traction bars, Heim joint Strut bars, URD Short Shifter, CC Twindisk Clutch, , Haltech Platinum Sport 1000 Standalone ECU, Pre-runner rear springs, V6 rearend with TRD limited-slip Differential New list....LS1 with T56 6-speed trans...simply awesome.
    Powertrax is a ratchet style, easy to install, but pops around turns and IMO affects handling in a negative way on the street, especially curvy roads..

    The True trac, you wont even know its in there, and will work for your use, harder to install, I have one in my Camaro, as a matter of fact I removed a Powertrax one to install the True-trac!

    I found a local guy that does installs on TruTracs. He said he would do mine for 350 plus the seal and oil providing I get the diff on my own. The TruTrac that would be installed is available through Summit Racing for about 433 buks. The Part #is 913A541 you should have a 7.5 rear diff now. If I go with the PowerTrax, I will do the install with a buddy of mine that has done diff work on his truck before. It seems like all the guys on our forum like the Trutrac.

    Drive Train Specialists quoted me $410 for the TrueTrac (I believe I have an 8").
    I'm planning on doing the install with a buddy of mine who's done plenty of work in both diffs of his Land Cruiser.

    I've ordered the TrueTrac & a new gasket, but am unsure as to what other parts I'll need to complete the install.

    I know you need to adjust backlash. Might need shims but I never installed a locker.
