Are you happy with the truck otherwise?

Sadly, even if everyone here has the same issue, the dealer will still need the truck to troubleshoot.

Yes, but you still need to take it to the dealer, and have them diagnose it in order to get it resolved.

If I told you that the issue was caused by the carrier bearing, you would still need to go to the dealer, and the dealer would still have their tech diagnose it.

I love the truck otherwise. I look at it like something I'm going to keep for a long time which is why this is so worrying for me.

Man, you need to chillaxx and give the dealer a chance. You have not even given them an opportunity to look at it and you are already saying you have a lemon. The transmission does downshift when slowing. Could that be what you are referring to?

Call the dealer. At least ask if you can make an appointment on a day you have time to go by and wait for them to do a diagnostic check. It should not cost anything but some time. Expecting the worse before even starting anything is a horrible way to go thru life. Give it a chance to play out

Yes I understand that, and I will be taking it to the dealer.

I just wanted to know if anyone had the issue, or knew of a fix so I don't have to just rely on their techs

I know going to the dealer for service is usually a bitch, but you have warranty, it’s new, find some time to take it in. Maybe they know what the issue is and you’ll be on your way. Could be a number of things causing it, internally, or just a vibration caused by something loose or worn out. Best bet is to let them go over it. Then it’s all documented in case it’s something worse.

best of luck, report back whatever you find out

I do need to relax, but it's tough when you're having issues with a brand new truck.

The issue with the downshifting is the jerkiness. I am used to feeling shifts, but this will move the entire body of the truck. It has me and my passengers moving in our seats.

The issue for me is that it costs time. I bought this truck to have something worry-free. I don't really have time to be chasing a dealer around to fix something.

i thought I would bring my truck to a Toyota master mechanic for a vague clutch issue. He is highly recommended and does excellent work himself. He told me to bring it to the dealer for a proper diagnostic. I find it hard to believe you won’t get a vehicle to use. Doesn’t your insurance, at the least, cover loss of use? CC’s? Really find it hard to believe that to get your vehicle looked at you can’t get something else to use.

In any case Toyota’s are very noisey. Extremely reliable but with no effort to isolate noise. Lexus’s have all the audible issues removed. Tacoma’s have pretty noise drive trains that will change tones at various levels of break-in and wear.

The cabin of a vehicle is a resonating chamber, trying to listen for noises by sitting inside is highly unlikely to lead you in the right direction.

My local service manager just sells me parts and I do my own work. He is wise and has suggested I try not to chase whirring by throwing parts at my truck and just install dynamat. He has literally nothing to gain by selling me less new OEM parts. These snarky comments are actually probably pretty wise in setting you on the right course.

with that said, get some video and audio and maybe we can help.

Btw I think you should bring it to the dealership.

It sounds to me like the transmission might be low on fluid. Because it isn’t random and doesn’t sound normal, you probably need to bite the bullet and get it into some dealers service department. Stand your ground and have it fixed.

Sucks to have to deal with it, but it does happen. Get a rental if needed.

Understood and agree. I always try to tell myself there is only so much I can do in any situation, and in time it will be done and the next thing will come up. Hope everything comes out ok. These trucks are expensive and should last a long time

I appreciate all the replies, even the snarky ones.

I am going to take it to the dealer, I just wanted to see if this is something common/usual for new tacos. It seems like it isn't which is what is worrying me.

I understand the cab is a big echo chamber, and that is why I tried to describe the circumstances for the noise, and not try to base it all on location.

I was hoping this could just be a truck that I did the maintenance on myself with OEM parts which is why I am not in a hurry to spend my time at the dealer.

I would ask if the dealer could give you a ride to work in the morning and pick you up when you get off? My dealer has a shuttle driver due to low inventory for loaners.

Appreciated! Do you know if the dealer reports an issue like this?

For instance, if I wanted to resell the vehicle would it come up with having the transmission inspected? I know maintenance is reported to Carfax, so I don't want to hurt any resale value.

You can still do the maintenance yourself. But brand new with a potential issue, have that taken care of. Ive read a lot of threads about different noises. Everyone has a different ear or method of explaining what they think they hear. I’m not recalling anything from my reading that helps me point you in the right direction.

You have a brand new truck still covered by the warranty. Nothing to stress over. Let the dealer handle it and wait for the next step.

A 3rd gen Tacoma having a transmission looked at because of an unhappy customer would be on every car fax report if it goes on yours :D Don’t worry about resale.

Toyotas are very easy to work on, like fuck I would have ever touched mine while under warranty though. What if you find out in 6months that your VIN is under a new TSB that just came out but you’ve voided your warranty… also when you go to the dealer you get a note in their system that this problem was identified. That will serve you down the road if other related parts fail.
