I changed my oil last night, but now I hope it wasn't the trans fluid. I drained the only plug there, where the oil drain usually is. It looked like oil, added 5qts, new filter, and I reset the maintanance light. But when I drove to work this morning, I'm getting weird acceleration jerks and finally it felt like it just stopped in over drive or something. What did I do? Please help!

Can I check trans fluid level somewhere? What if I added trans fluid and changed oil on the spot?

Didn't you check your dipstick after adding oil? That will answer your question as to which oil you drained and filled. If the truck is not moving you may need to take it in, have it towed in, and have it checked out. Also I don't think you could get an extra 5 quarts into the truck without it running out the filler.

Any chance I reset something I wasn't suppose to? I reset something in the regular odo mode then realized I had to be in trip A to reset the light

I came in from the driver side and it's the first and only plug I see. I'll look again when the sun comes up.

It was oil, semi dirty brownish black fluid. Isn't trans fluid pink?

Here's a pic from a thread : The trans is long and retangular . The oil pain is smaller and oval and sits to the front of the trans and crossmember with a small hump and one bolt.

I'll look again when I get a chance. I'm the only one at work now and have to get things going. But I am positive that's the one I drained. Hell the plug was on a little more than finger tight

Any chance I reset something when I was in the mileage odo mode. I reset a couple things before I saw the maint light didn't reset. Then I flipped it to trip a mode and reset it

It really does sound like you might have changed the trans fluid in error if you are getting erratic surges. Definitely not drive it. I would at least drain the oil to the correct level if this was the case and tow it in a toyota mechanic. The trans is a sealed transmission and better to have a toyota mechanic with deal with checking/filling it. You be surprised how common this mixup is on our 2nd gens. Heck, I was disoriented recently myself when changing my oil. Had to google an oil pan pic to confirm..ha.

Son of a bitch. I just looked again. One small pan but 2 plugs. One tucked away on the passenger side. FML. Didn't say any thing about this in the manual.

Yep, 2 plugs is the transmission..Drain the oil to the right level and tow it to a shop or dealer. Just make sure if local shop that they have worked on Tacomas before with the sealed transmission. Hopefully no damage was done.

    Do dents and scratches count?
 Get it towed dude. You could wipe your trans and your engine if you haven't already. No idea about cost.

I totally fail to understand how one can drain the transmission and overfill the engine with 5 extra quarts and it read only a little high on the engine dipstick. The level would be all the way up the stick. I understand the mistake but not how the stick can read only a little high.
If this is really what happened do not drive it less both the engine and the transmission are at risk.
As to can you fix it yes. Drain the oil from the engine and replace it with the correct amount. Fill the transmission to the correct level but do not drive it until you do. By the way I don't think that you are not suppose to put 5 whole quarts into the engine even with a filter change.
First be very sure that you even made an error and figure out what it is. Then if you find you drained the transmission get the right oil and proceed.

I would not chance it doing yourself if you are unfamiliar with the sealed transmission of the Tacoma. In order for you to accurately check the trans fluid, it has to be at a specific temp which is read by a scan tool. Guys have done DIY by jumping the OBD for the temp read but I'm not familiar enough to tell you the process. The only thing you should do yourself is drain the excess oil. Tow it in for the trans refill, even that I would take to the dealer. Local shops may just refill it and send you off your way without doing it correctly.
