I have a 2017 Tacoma SR5 double cab. I left my house in eastern KY Friday night towing my empty 5x8 trailer. Truck had about 750 miles at start of trip. I towed the trailer about 150 miles to our other house. I didn't realize I needed to have the transmission in S mode while towing. Temps were in the mid to low 40s the entire trip. I never really noticed it hunting for gears. Most of the terrain here is rolling hills and some steeper hills back in east KY so it never really stayed in OD long. The trailer weighs about 500 lbs. I had my wife and the dog with me plus an overnight bag. Did I damage anything?

Seriously, why would I be trolling? It's a legit question. I didn't realize I needed to use s mode.

You should not have damaged your truck. I've read the owners manual multiple times and have never read anything in my 2017 owners manual about needing to be in "S" mode when towing. Normal "D"rive should be fine and using ECT if its hunting for gears or if you just want it to hold in gears longer. Using ECT is not necessary though. If you don't notice anything different from before towing the trailer there should be nothing to worry about. The only thing i read is to not tow anything for something like the first 500 mi during break in and you did say you were at 750 mi, so once again you should be fine.

Hey ya know, every has to start out somewhere. Im pretty sure you will be fine on it. If it was searching for gears, or felt like it was really sluggish (which it shouldnt because the weight was so minimal) then you have no worroes.

You're fine. Only thing I'd think to worry about is towing with so few miles since the manual recommends not towing for the first XYZ miles. If it's 500 then you're fine.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I think it's only when towing for long periods of time with a heavy load it would overheat the gear I think you're fine

Just pulled the 2017 manual out of my truck to verify and everything i originally said is correct from what i can find. "S" mode is not necassary. When using "D" you can use ECT "when high levels of response and feeling are desirable, such as when driving in mountainous regions or when pulling a trailer." pg 198 of the 2017 manual. It does state in the owners manual that you should not tow until after the first 500 mi,pg 158 of the manual.(there are additional break).

Your truck should be fine. It does not sound like you have done anything wrong and you should have nothing to worry about. Keep enjoying your truck!

5000lbs, I'd think about fluid temp getting up there. 500lbs, it's fine.

this is a 3rd gen... They love searching for gears! The TSB does help that a when using cruise control.

Thank you all for the responses. I thought it would be ok but I wanted reassurance. Thanks again!
