I know the 1st gen tacoma double cab came with either the 3.4L V6 or the 2.7 3rzfe i4. Based on the research Ive done so far, I believe the 3rz did come in manual transmission but just because it did doesnt necessarily mean that the Double cab 4 cylinder came in manual.

So my question is, did the 1st gen double cab ever come with the 3rz in manual?

    Nope.

You could swap the tranny if you really wanted to.

Well that's a bummer. I was hoping to do an SAS on a double cab, but I really only want a manual. I found a bunch of threads with manual swaps, but it looks like a lot of parts sourcing :(

You want to put a solid axle under an IFS truck but you're worried about the work needed to swap an automatic to a manual transmission?

Yeah, I've done engine/ trans swaps, and I'm much better at suspension :rofl:or at least I have better patience with suspension.

I'm planning on 1 tons and 40's amd coil overs, I just need to decide what gen I want to pull the trigger on, I like them all. I've started collecting all the pieces, just need to lock down the vehicle. The high manual trans gearing and lack of low end torque with the 3rd gens has me not wanting to go that route, but a low mile 2nd gen is the same price as a 3rd gen, hell a low mile clean 1st gen double cab is right up there with them.

This thing took about 2 years to long to build, but it only seats two, not much fun when more people want to wheel.

If you can get the parts it really isn't that hard on the V6. You just need the transmission and associated parts like clutch peddle box, clutch master cyl, lines, slave cyl, and of course the clutch and flywheel. If you need to pass an inspection you'd also need a computer from a manual truck of the same year. You may need different drivelines but I've heard with the V6 you can just use 1" driveline spacers. I did the harder version of this swap on the 4cyl and other than getting a new way to mount the transmission there wasn't a part that was too tough, making the holes in the firewall for the clutch parts was the hardest.

Nice. Yeah I would agree a doublecab would be best, since most of the bed is probably going to disappear anyway. Trans swap in a 1st gen is way easier than 2nd or 3rd, it's one wiring harness plus slave cylinder, pedal linkage, and a little crossmember modification. Not sure I'd even want to try it in a late model.

Thanks for the info @Speedytech7 and @drr, I'll do some more digging through some of the swap threads. I've always liked the looks of the 1st gens. The 2nd and 3rd gens start to get a little to big for fitting down some of the tighter trails.

I'm hoping to keep this build to under a year. With the Juggy, I purchased and built as I went along. It would of gone much faster if I had everything before hand.

Edit: And a JK is out of the question, I don't fit in well with those guys. I like to keep my gag reflex.

I have the slowest gen 1

Double cab + 4 cyl in a straight poverty spec model. Mine is what the kids call “SR” these days. No tach, no clock, nothing , in a double cab!!!

I love it. If it had a man pedal, I would never ever sell it

I even have the info and how much from the OR shop that does these swaps.... just a matter of time to get it done

Only thing keeping double cab 1st gen Tacomas from being the best truck ever made on god's green earth; no manual trans option.

That would make it a great niche vehicle, a great truck has a more usable bed and an engine setup for hauling heavy loads. I've always said Tacomas aren't great trucks, but they're great platforms.

I hear ya, I really wanted a double cab when I was looking but it violated my #2 rule (had to be a manual trans). #1 was it had to be 4x4.

I plan on keeping my truck until the day I die but that would be easier to justify if it could comfortably seat more than 1 other person (for when kid(s) come along someday). I settled on the xtra cab and I love my truck but I know I'll regret the extra space eventually.

very true, I have no real need for hauling heavy loads so I never really factored that into my equation lol. I wanted a reliable DD and weekend 4x4 warrior, which I definitely got but unfortunately had to sacrifice the comfy back seats for the crammed ones.

that was my bad, I went to edit my post and accidentally deleted it lol.

You don't have to worry about giving up your tacoma if you get another awesome vehicle for family activities. That where a Land Cruiser comes in :D I plan to turn my Taco into a vehicle that wouldn't be safe for young children anyway haha.
