I wonder if Toyota has ever looked at offering a diesel version of our Taco? I just bought an 06 VW Jetta TDI and love the fuel economy (35cty 42 hwy). I love my Taco also but, I would love it more at 30mpg or better <laugh>!

Toyota already makes a diesel version, just not in North America. The Hilux has a 3.4L turbo diesel (correct me if I'm wrong 007).

TRDeity: Close - The Hilux is offered in a 2.5 and 3.0 configurations.

Tacobill: My last car was a 1998 Jetta TDI (old ALH engine). I averaged mid-40s to low-50s on a regular basis. At well over 200,000 miles, I sold it to my best friend who promptly took it apart to rebuild the engine and then got lazy. :(

So, now I am trying to buy it back from him. We shall see.

As for a North American Toyota Diesel - It looks like Toyota is concentrating on a diesel for the Tundra. Unfortunately it sounds like it is going to be a 6.0L+ size engine for serious work. It probably won't get any higher than 20 MPG.

I am pushing to get a 2.5L D4D engine put into the Tacoma. With mid-20s for fuel economy and the power of a V6, I would be in heaven. It is more likely that we would get the 3.0L D4D and that won't happen for at least another 5 years. I am still praying.

    Cheers! :drunk:

There isn't any confirmation on that, but the rumor is that the 2010 redesign would include a D4D engine. While I would love that - I don't think it is going to come true. Besides, they probably won't do a major redesign until 2012 at the earliest.
