My old man has been through quite a few powerstrokes and duramax trucks and the Chevy gets my vote. They're quiet, powerful and reliable. The older powerstrokes were good engines but I'm not sold on the new ones. I haven't had any first hand experience with the new powerstroke but I've heard they suck fuel pretty bad. The new duramax with the allison transmission is a very nice set-up. If you go that route, I'd spring for the buly dog chip. It makes the truck get better fuel economy and run better overall (the power modes are fun also). Not that it matters but he's consistantly getting 22-23 MPG's with an extended cab 4x4 diesel, unloaded of course and after the bully dog chip. Impressive for a heavy truck like that.

My old company bought a 2009 PowerStroke it was JUNK, the older powerstrokes were AWESOME but the news ones stay away from.

I'm not a fan of duramax's heard good and bad things dodges well they are notorious for trannys going out, I did have a friend who loved his cummings though.

Just stay away from Ford for diesels they will eventually put a good motor back in them.

    Just my .02

Unless you are looking for a brand new truck, I vote the duramax. My dad has the new 2011 ford and it is beast... The duramax in about 2007, the LBZ duramax, was essentially the hot rod of GM diesel engines. It came before all of this emissions crap and has more power than most anything today. Oh, and it got about 23 consistent as just a little kicker.

Look into bully dog, from what I understand (sure someone will correct me if I am wrong) the black smoke is actually diesel that is not being burnt and it just comes out black smoke.

They have different programmers my company got one for the work diesel and it was a on the fly shifter you could program it for speed, smoke, hauling, normal, the smoke one was FUN lol!!!

Whistling Im guessing your talking about the tubro not to sure on that one....

the black smoke means the truck is not properly tuned right (running way to rich), and the whistle is from the turbo (usually replaced with a larger one)

edit: dammit someone beat me to it...

That sounds sweet..I'm looking for a 2010 or a 2011..I really don't like silent trucks..so I saw a vid on youtube of a 2010 or 11 duramax with a capback and it sounded really good! I think it was a mbrp?

It doesnt look like something is wrong with it, when you see the diesels at the pull shows they are tuned right (most of them) and they are blowing smoke like no tomorrow, because they are broke? No.

Now if a gas engine is smoking like a diesel then yeah something bad is going on.

See 18 wheelers smoke all the time to doesnt mean their is something wrong with it.

I'm not talking about a smoke show, I'm talking about a little smoke.

I agree about the smoke. I don't like it at all you can have a plenty powerful and quick truck without having all the smoke. Of course there is always going to be a little with diesels, but I hate those big black clouds.

ATO front skid (need more but icon's might fail if I hang anything else from my truck) All-Pro front bumper thanks to a good deal here and a pesky encounter with a rock or 20, total chaos uppers.
Not to be a dick but blowing black smoke from your engine just adds more pollutants to the air, not to be a tree hugger but it just gives them more ammunition when the see diesels puffing black smoke. Now don't get me wrong I would love a big diesel v8 ( I just don't need a full size truck). Plus it serves no purpose. Now a turbo whistle is something I can understand.

Well the main reason I need a full size is beacuae the tacoma is NOT 4x4 and it can't tow,, I want a toyhauler and I don't want to get a small one just for the tacoma. And I wouldn't dare bring a toyhauler pulled with a tco to the dunes! Instant stuck
