I used to have a 2006 Ford F-250 Lariat 4x4 Powerstroke Diesel and ended up making 495RWHP and 795 Ft lbs of Tq [IMG] It was an amazing truck.

However, sometimes I use my jobs 2008 GMC Duramax Dually to tow a 32 ft enclosed car trailer that weighs about 16-18k lbs. I am impressed at the power and quality of the bone stock GM truck. They run about 50k or so fully loaded.

I picked up my 2006 Ford for about 42k new in 2006. I don't think i would buy a new Powerstroke truck due to some of the issues people have encountered with the engines and mileage issues.

I would say go with the Ford. The new Powerstroke in the 2011 model is amazing. Something else to consider - F-Series trucks have been the best selling trucks for 33+ years. Even when you add Silverado and Sierra sales together they don't come close to the number of trucks Ford sells.

Do some research on the GM's. Some people aren't fond of the weak independent front suspension on such a big truck. Not sure of all the details but lots of guys breaking front end suspension parts. I am sure it is always relative to the combination of aftermarket parts and other factors but def. something to look into.

You can blow smoke pretty easily with a turbo-back exhaust and a good diesel programmer. If your into serious tuning you can get an EFI-live setup. It can tune your engine and turbo to make smoke or lope or huge power. There's tons of mods for the diesel, so expect to spend some cash if you want to make it badass.

Oh, and if you pull a trailer consider getting stacks. Otherwise the smoke will coat everything in soot.

Thanks guys! ..I remember I was at pismo and my brother in law was driving a powerstroke 4x4. Well I got burried with a trailer(2 quads and a dirtbike) and he couldn't pull me out! He burried himself.even with the front lockers, then he aired down more and got me out, then I got stuck again and he could not get me out!..a tundra pulled me out in about 1 tug..with the ford we weren't moving, just spining

A lot of people will tell you all of the black smoke is because its not tuned right.. this isn't always the case. the biggest enemy of a diesel (when you use it to TOW) is EGT (exhaust gas temp.) people don't understand that when you add more fuel it will help keep the EGT's lower

Well yeah, but you can't deny the fact that many diesel owners do a "smoke" tune. Bully Dog tunes are notorious for this. People also think it is cool to do "lope" tunes as well... Not my cup of tea. I prefer a nice and clean, nearly smokeless tune.

very true, but not all smoking diesels are just for fun or for looks.. some are built with a purpose. mine blows ALOT of smoke, but when i'm towing its for a purpose... plus its fun to smoke out the ricer cars :D

I think some of the mindset in this thread in regards to smoke and diesels is part of the reason you don't get the more maintstream diesels in the U.S. that alot of you guys so desperately beg for.

You're not going to get people to support bringing more diesels over when all they see is big trucks billowing out clouds of black smoke. It's dirty, dangerous for the environment, and makes you look like an asshat.

To the OP, sorry to hijack your thread. I'm sure either truck would do you just fine if taken care of. I have no experience with a diesel full-size so I'm not going to try and give any advice. Just PLEASE keep your diesel truck clean-burning.

I've got the new 2011 Powerstroke for a work truck and man oh man is it nice. I am super impressed with what they've done in house with that engine. We'll see how it does in the long term, but initial quality is nothing short of wicked. Second, Ford is known for having really solid frames and exceptional interior quality, provided you get one of the nice packages of course.

They've given me an FX4 Powerstroke and the fit and finish inside is actually really good. No leather or anything like that but still pretty damn good.

They used to give us Dodge 2500 Cummins and those were beasts as well. There is a reason pretty much every fire truck has a Cummins in it. They rock. Second, Dodge's quality control has been steadily improving, so don't be so quick to dismiss them. Although the new Cummins redesign should be here in the next year or so. Can't wait to see what they've done with it. :D

ford makes a decent engine now, chevy is ok but i dont like the ifs on a 1 ton truck, but so far cummins has made the best engine. If you could take the cummins from dodge, put it on the allison transmission from chevrolet, and put it in a ford body and frame you would have the ultimate machine ha ha

You're actually right... But I think that Allison is just a name. I actually don't think its any better than a modern Ford automatic.
