My 01 came with a diff lock switch. i've tried turning it on once. the light just blinked.

i was browsing through the 2nd gen taco forum and saw that the stock config only lets the locker engage when it's in 4lo. is it the same for the first gen? is that why my light just kept blinking?

if so, is there a mod to bypass it? can i use the same writeup to do the mod as the 05+?

    lots of questions!

What you are looking for is referred to as the "Grey Wire Mod"

And yes unmodded Toyota designed it to only be used in 4lo

The diff lock has to be performed in 4 wheel low.

It doesn't HAVE to be used only in for low but toyota did include this as a safety feature and quite frankly you should never really need this in any other situation. If you are in a predicament that requires extreme traction, the lo and lock combo will work but usually just the low itself will work in places where you would be tempted to use the high and lock feature. I would not bypass the lo and lock feature unless you really know how to use it or at least make sure you use it with caution.
