diff oil recomendation

have a 03 with diff lock curious to see what guys are putting in i know manaul states 90w but curious if people are using synthetic

 

My recomendation is use what you service manual says but you can use synthetic but verify is youe diff is limited slip or not.

 

i drained the factory fill at 20k from my e-locker diff(06 prerunner) and put in mobil1 75w90 synthetic......no problems whatsoever. i've heard good stuff about royal purple,redline and amsoil diff. fluid also. may wanna check those out also. i got mobil1 cause it was readily available at autozone for around $10 a quart.

 

I use Castrol Synthetic in both Diffs. (rear e-lock),also the transfercase..different weights required check your manual

 

We have had really good luck with the Royal Purple.

75w-90. I used that in my 96 tacoma in everything.

Amsoil has a great 'Severe Gear' oil that you can use in limited slip diffs. Our vette has it without any added modifiers (modifiers are already in the Amsoil Severe Gear oil).

I have amsoil full synthetic severe gear in mine in 75-90 so far so good I think it actually helped my mileage a tad.

 

Do you have to use a special diff oil if you have a limited slip differential? Will the Royal Purple work in differentials with or without limited slip?

you need a gear oil with lsd modifiers in it already, or you can what ever gear oil you want to(75w90 or 80w90) and add a tube of the lsd additive.

yeah, that wont hurt anything. are you speaking of an open diff/locker?? if so, it wont hurt anything because there arent any solenoids like there are for an lsd.

 

Yeah, I think so. I have an '06 tacoma 2.7L 4x4, which does not have a lsd, so I was just curious if I can use lsd gear oil (like royal purple) in it.

 

if you dont have the lsd, you'll be fine with some rp......good stuff there. mine pumpkin took right at 3 quarts.

 

I'm confused (which is nothing new), but am I correct in that my 03 pre w/rear diff lock is not an lsd unit? What is this about lsd oil vs. standard 80-90w gear oil? I'm using 80-90w gear oil in the diff...did I f/u?

 

what rear diff do you have??? if it is a locker rear diff......standard gear oil is what to use, and if its an lsd......you need standard gear oil and an lsd additive, unless the gear oil already has it in it.

O'Reilly's house brand: $3.50/quart @ 3 quarts. I plan on changing it in another 25k, and I don't tow.

 

I have a 08 tucoma with a 4 cyl. 5 speed. In the mornings when I start off the trans. shifts smoothly, once warm I get alot of chatter when shifting.
Anyone have the same proplem?
I've taken it to the dealer and they say nothing wrong.
I was thinking of changing the trans. oil to synthtic Mobil 1 75-90 or 75-140
I leaning towards the 75-140 but I am not sure if I can run it.
