I think the 2005 has actual lsd while the 2011 uses the brakes.

i know the X-Rs use the rear brakes as a simulated "limited Slip" in those years, but im not sure about anything that is prerunner or 4x4, to include the TRD Offroad or Sport

The Main difference is 2005 TRD Sport has a mechanical LSD whereas the 2011 TRD Sport has ALSD... which is an electronic LSD that uses the brakes to simulate the same function as an LSD.

Personally, I'd rather have the mechanical LSD

Thank you...confirmed my thoughts....Id rather have mechanical but I cant pass up a 2011 SPORT DC LB 4X4 for 27000 with only 2000mi on it. Plus its a private party sale.

My understanding is that auto LSD is only active "on 2WD models and in 2WD mode on 4WD models" (Tacoma manual, page 183). Even SR5's have auto LSD. Surely the system on the TRD Sport is much more than this, though the manual makes no mention of it. You guys sure that new TRD Sports don't still have a mechanical LSD?

yes im sure... makes the new sports even worse of a buy...

the alsd is also in the trac system which operated in 4wd. in 2wd trac limits throttle until you hit the button and turn on lsd but in 4wd hi, trac is not limited by throttle and the front and rear diffs act as lsds. this is on all 09+tacomas non trd offroad. so basically you pay that much extra for the scoop and colored matched stuff and the traction is the same

But it's still open diffs in 4lo then. That is, without the yellow wire mod. Well geez the SR5 package has auto LSD & TRAC. Why the F would Toyota limit the TRD Sport so much? Surely they are worthy of at least a good mechanical LSD.

^ A lot of the older SR5s came with a mechanical LSD. It not only was an option that could be added on, but was standard on the DC LB. And just about every SR5 in my area came with one regardless of body configuration (I think our dealership only ordered SR5s with the LSD). So really, nothing has changed between the SR5 and TRD Sport in that regard. The TRD Sport was not about the LSD, but everything else that was TRD related. The LSD was just an added bonus that could be gotten on any other truck with the SR5 package.

The brake-based "auto LSD" is present on all the '09+ Tacomas, SR5 or TRD Sport, because Toyota employs the same components to achieve all safety features like ABS, traction control, brake assist and vehicle stability control. Distinguishing features of the TRD Sport are cosmetic items and better seats.

No. A new Sport gets you different fabric/seats (and sometimes different interior colors as I've heard people say you can't get the tan interior with a TRD), hood scoop, color-keyed body parts (mirrors, front grill, rear bumper, door handles), bilstein shocks, temp/compass display. Traction Control/ALSD comes standard on both now. In the old days, you would say the SR5 didn't come standard with LSD because it was an add-on to the package (like the JBL stereo for instance). All the differences that existed then still exist now except for the LSD.

Thanks moose...I knew about the cosmetics part of it I was just curious about the LSD not being mechanical.

Using the brakes to slow a spinning tire is sure smarter than using clutches inside the differential... imo.

Which is less likely to fail, and which is less expensive to service... brake pads or differentials?

Yes, you also get TRAC in H4 which is limited slip on the front axle, too.

Of course, if traction (from the factory) was improtant for you, then you would want the Off Road 4WD and not a Sport.
