To prevent water from entering the rear diff. Moves the vent up higher, the front is already done from factory.....no idea why the back wasnt.

If you move it up high enough with a long tube then no prolly not. Alot put the union on and run a long vent tube up into the brake light housing.

A much easier way, if you didn't want to run hose up high, and have to mess with all of that, is to just add a few inches of 1/4 or 3/8" hose, depending on the size, and add this inline check valve. I use these all the time, also great for one man brake bleeding jobs. Allows flow only in one direction...

that was my first thought when I read about the breather. Why doesn't it have a check valve to prevent h20 from entering? My only hesitation with a valve would be: what occurs to the diff if breather plugged?

The only reason that rear differential has a valve or a breather for the only purpose is to keep it from building up too much pressure inside and not blowing the seals out. it has nothing to do with water coming in or out, it has nothing to do with anything other than relieving internal pressure, that's why the check valve is good because it will allow the pressure to release from the inside of the rear end housing and not let anything go back in.

I’ve read through several of the threads about this and I still don’t understand why this is necessary. If it’s just to vent pressure, why does it need to be elevated? The vent is one way so I’m not getting the danger of water ingress. ELI5 anyone?

Sometime the OEM breather valves turn into a no way valve and stop working and blow seals, seriously look at the 2nd Gen forum there’s members that had this happen.

Aftermarket or ARB 2way open breathers are reloacated higher in the bed or near the brake light.
