California lawmakers are working on a plan to implement digital license plates. These could display advertising when the car is stopped. Lawmakers hope the ads will bring in additional revenue. The DMV would handle ad sales. License plate ads could be a dangerous distraction.

In regards to other vehicle advertising efforts, there are also existing companies that have applicates for cars and trucks that fit apply over the body of the vehicle (much like you see on public buses) that individuals can sign up and be paid for leaving on their vehicle for a certain period of time.

QUESTION: Do you think digital license plates with ads are a good idea?

They're capable of everything, but this is just stupid. Wait, it is California so what would you expect? Also wouldn't it cost more to buy a digital plate than the adds would bring in? Also would it use GPS to know if the car is moving or not? I can tell you I wouldn't want the government splicing into my speed wire.

States are grabbing at whatever they can to try and come up with additional sources of revenue. A real concern associated with such a digital plate is the ability incorporated with such a plate to program the advertising by remote which also ties to that same ability to locate and know where a vehicle is at any given time, good or bad. In my opinion, this is one sad idea by some grandstanding self-appointed wannabe tech-guru lawmaker that just isn't viable for many reasons.

Absurd. Yes, I need my license plate to be capable of malfunctioning. That would be great, because my list of shit to fix right now is only about 5 pages long.

Really, to resolve the budget issues, they just need to hire more CHP and start enforcing traffic laws. The amount of potential revenue is staggering.

State Sen. Curren D. Price Jr. of Los Angeles should be thrown out of office for negligence of his public duty for wasting time and effort and my $$$.

Wow.......I say they should go for the gusto and make LCD license plates so you can watch American Idol/commercials while sitting in traffic jams?

I am in for having a feminine hygiene product advertised or even a Trojan advertisement. It would be hilarious.

What makes this different from cabs with digital advertisement? And they also said that the advertisement would only "turn on" when the cars are stopped.

So this means cops can't run your plates when you're stopped. lol

What if it breaks each time you get into a minor accident?

Ya know, you California guys should just all get together and jump at the same time, with any luck you'd break that earthquake fault loose and the whole state would sink in the Pacific and end the misery.
