Are all toyota dipsticks this retarded? Or is just me Every single time I put it in and take it out it's giving me a false reading who the hell designed these dipsticks he should be fired and banned from automotive forever. This is the worst dipstick i've ever had. I pull it out it shows me i'm too high on one side too low on the other. Then I check the side with just the raised bumps and there is oil above the minimum then a gap of no oil and then OIL smeared ABOVE THE MAXIMUM. How is anyone supposed to get an accurate reading on their oil with this absolute garbage dipstick ?

So frustrating because now I'm worried about driving because I don't know if the oil level is too high. I can't believe how stupid this thing is

Scuff the bottom with some fine grit sand paper and it'll hold the oil better. Also wait a little between pulls for the oil in the dip stick tube to drain back down.

I blasted the end in the bead blaster. Works perfectly.

Sounds like you’re having a problem with pulling out. Personally I don’t have this problem, so I’m no help here.

if I scuff the bottom or the measuring zone this wont affect the reading negatively? how much should i scuff up should i go past the maximum level or just the minimum to the max area ?

Just a tiny bit, like maybe the green side of a sponge will be enough, or some 1500 grit paper. I would just go a little above the max level

It is a stupid dipstick, no doubt. I scuffed it up with a file. Works marginally better.

    - Run engine for a few mins- shut off engine- pull out dipstick, clean and set it aside for 5 mins- insert dipstick all the way for several seconds- pull out and you will have an accurate reading. Oil can stay in the dipstick tube and cause a difficult read so leaving it out helps the tube clear. I also find the dipstick inserts easier with the “bumps” facing the engine, if you get what I mean.

They couldn’t even be nice enough to have a spot on the transmission to add one aftermarket...

This. The 5 minute period is critical to get an easy reading. Only vehicle I have or have ever owned that was this hard to read.

I usually check it after letting my truck sit overnight.
