I live on a very steep, narrow hill and several times during the winter months find myself having to engage my locker to disable the ABS.

SOMETIMES there are situations where ABS increases the risk of an accident rather than decreasing it - especially on very loose surfaces.

ABS was fine on my new snow tires. Was goin down the freeway in 2wd at 50-60 mph in 3-4" of snow and no sliding or spinning! Went 50 in 4wd to pass trucks and lines, not worth getting risky and i want more time and conditions to test em still.

Conditions were no gravel on road yet, 28 degrees or so, 3 inches of snow, with packed ruts from previous traffic. 3500' or so snow level.

1-2" at camp, went elk hunting. Sadly no success this year.

    Love internet arguements.

I just throw it in 4LO if I'm going downhill, and downshift. I'll never touch the brakes. Haven't had a problem with that so far. I find anytime traction is an issue going down a hill, you're just asking for trouble by using brakes. Braking pressure is 60/40 in general. Downshifting is 50/50

I HATE my ABS offroad in the loose stuff- sand, snow, gravel, etc. It totally increases the stopping distance imo.

I thought i heard somewhere that it is possible to "disable" the ABS system by pulsing your brakes manually? Kind of like an override to tell the vehicle, you have the "stick". Correct me if im wrong... Im suprised Chris 4x4 hasnt chimed in yet. Curious to read his two cents...

I'm pretty quick at reacting... could this disable ABS thing be switched at the instant you need it?

there is a plug on the drivers side fenderwell under the hood that is the wires coming from the driver front wheel sensor. i've unplugged it before when offroading in really muddy conditions to kill the ABS. i wouldn't mind having a switch to be able to do it.

I want to do this as well, there are times that a controlled slide with the brakes locked up is way better than the ABS system in the snow/ice

I'm still sticking to the idea of rather than accepting a controlled slide in snow over ABS, get more traction from your tires by siping/lower psi. Or buy the tires that get you traction. I do understand though that a 2nd set of tires can be a tough option.

ABS not stopping you, and defeating ABS to slide are the symptom of wrong tires for the situation, remedy the tires. A lot of honestly good tires won't work on ice/pack snow, but work good on fresh snow.

On my other truck i used to unplug the sensor on the wheel. It worked well, the truck thought there was something wrong with the brake system and shut the whole abs down. I soon learned it wasnt a good idea because the plug would get jammed with mud. A switch would be a great idea. Im going to try it. Ill let you all know.

I've got siped ice radials that are also studded. ABS isn't the answer 100% of the time.

Nothing is ever is 100% with tires, or, a tire for all situations. Once you risk goin down a grade steep enough In the winter, chains won't help even, I keep away from those times anymore.
I had my 96 bronco's ABS not stop me twice on it's first winter, after buying winter oriented tires, ABS has never became an issue. So while ABS isn't an answer 100% of the time, It hasnt had a chance to become an issue at all since then. And like I said , I wont go 4 wheeling on a winter slope anymore, with 4 chains on a 4wd there is still the risk of sliding down steeper slopes.

ABS was real bad for me last year in the snow, almost made me slide into a few intersections and my garage door...

Read my origional post guys. Real EZ, just splice onto and ground through a dash switch the blue w/ yellow stripe wire (rear locker sensor) that emerges out of the floor grommet under drivers seat. 15 min job.

Only off road. ABS really helps otherwise ya know.

I can't stand the ABS in my truck. It is way too sensitive at low speeds where there is ice and snow. I've slid right through stop signs and nearly slid into busy intersections on almost perfectly dry, clean roads because one wheel hit a small spot of ice and the ABS decided it should take away all my braking power.

Unfortunately I don't have a locker, so I can't do that mod everyone talks about.

I did the same thing, just lucky no one was coming thru the intersection at the same time my ABS put me in the middle of it. I have also almost slid into my garage door doing no mph when the ABS kicked it in my driveway. If there is a solution I'd like to hear it.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
The only things that would be missing are the electric actuator, the harness from the actuator to the 4wd ECU, and the fancy dancy button
