I have to ask this question - how do you rotate 4 tires, front and back, with two jack stands?
I have seen diagrams which recommend rotating the rear tires forward and opposite sides, so it would seem to me that you would have to jack the rear and front in order to accomplish this.

I think he supports one end with jack stands and one with the floor jack... which is sketchy, but thrifty

Yeah, I don't feel comfortable with that approach. I went out recently and bought an extra jack stand set. Would someone share which end is best to jack up first - front or rear?

You take one wheel off at a time, then "leap-frog" each wheel where it's supposed to go. You can use the jack stand to hold up the first tire removed, or if you don't have any jack stands at all, you can install your spare tire temporarily. And if you have a full-size, matching spare, it's actually recommended that you include it in the rotation to gain another 20% tire life.

Check out the diagram at 5:11
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLx74s72Kgo

    Edit for clarification:

    1) Set parking brake and chock front-passenger wheel.
    2) Lift rear-passenger (RP) side, remove tire.
    3) Either install spare or place jack stand under the frame, remove jack
    4) Roll RP tire to front-driver (FD) side, lift, remove FD tire, and install RP tire.
    5) Repeat per diagram til all tires have been changed. Either return Spare to its holder, or put last remaining tire in the Spare holder
    6) Ensure all beer is consumed prior to finishing the project.

You should open up your own PI firm, first you have to decipher what sarcasm is. It usually shows when you've answered the same post or question numerous times. Not sure why you didn't read through this thread and see that I posted several times I live in a condo, HOA=no working on cars. But yes I install my own lifts, build my own rtt rack, build houses, over all reasonably talented guy.

I personally don't have a preference, just make sure that your floor jack is on a smooth surface so it can roll while you're jacking it up... tough to explain with no diagram, but since the floor jack arm lifts in an arc, it will have to roll just a bit with each pump, if it can't roll it will try to pull the truck and can pull it off the jack stands holding up the other end of the truck... hope that makes sense...

    Sorry for the thread jack...

    Wait... no I'm not

Yes I have, and I get up and say something. Not sure why you're complacent with that process. It's amazing what speaking your mind can accomplish.

I get being annoyed by having a 1 hour wait to rotate tires, but jeez OP that level of pissed off is usually only seen by moms at K-mart demanding a manager.

It would be different if, after an hour or two, they hadn't started on your rotation and failed to give you a heads up. That happened to me, and I was pissed.

Also, they have probably been trained to advise against wheel spacers, as some think they are not safe. I think it's less of an upsale and more of "if you see these, advise the customer of their disadvantages" type thing.

Either way, I don't see this as an "avoid discount tire omg omg omg" type thing. Even if it was that level, it would be avoid that location, not all discount tire centers.

Like I said before, if you have nothing better to do with your time, that's up to you. I happen to think people should do what they say they're going to do. Different standards I suppose.

Sorry to hear some of you guys had such shitty experiences.

I've purchased 2 sets of tires over the last 5 yrs from my local Discount Tires...a set for my wife's Traverse, and a set for my 04 Tacoma...no complaints. I went in there and told them I want this set of tires, and they didn't try to upsell me once. I was treated professionally and respectfully...no issues. I've dealt with the manager on each transaction and he was good to go. I had to go back once because one of my truck tires wouldn't hold air, and they replaced it with a new one, no questions asked. I know I've been in at least 3 times for tire rotations and each took around 40 mins or so with an appointment.

To be fair, they did what they said they would, assuming your rotation was done. It just took longer than you like, and not by much.

I used to work in automotive. With all the mandatory checks imposed by law, even a tire rotation would take 20-30 minutes. They have to check all bulbs, fluids, pressures (obviously), etc etc etc. Also, from my experience, things get backed up. Appointments get priority, but sometimes by the time the appointment comes up, everyone is already on a vehicle or all lifts are taken, etc. If a minor thing like that will lose your business, you should just get used to doing all your own wrenching, because soon enough you will rule out every shop.

A million reasons things could get backed up. An apology is in order though, to be fair. They should have said something along the lines of "I apologize, I know you have an appointment, but all our lifts are in use/all our staff is working on other vehicles, and it will be a bit of time till we start on yours. It will be next in the shop, though. I'm sorry for the inconvenience."

When Toyota had my truck for 2 hours without getting to it, and I had an appointment, they tried to say "Appointments only mean your car will get started today, it doesn't mean it will be finished today." That was enough for me to never go back.

Yes, that's what I do... I have many jack stands, depending on what I'm doing, sometimes I'll use 4 of them. Normally to rotate tires, I'll get the front set up on jack stands, then use the floor jack under the rear diff to barely lift both rear wheels off the ground. On level ground it's pretty stable. I am very careful, and wouldn't crawl under with that however.

Because the front end weighs a lot more than the rear of the truck, I place the jack stands up front...

    1. Yes, I actually used to work in Private Security on the investigative side of things.
    2. I've heard of this sarcasm thing, and I know a little bit about it to know that you're doing it wrong.
    3. I live in an apartment complex with the same rules, yet I can rotate my tires in less than 20 minutes in a Walmart parking lot for free.
    4. Don't you have to take your tires off to install a lift? Why not rotate them right then and there?

    1 No you didn't!
2 Nope, pretty much nail it every time.
3 I'm not ghetto like that. Higher standard.
4 We'll since I only do 1 lift per vehicle, I guess that would be 1 rotation. So, point taken.
