Miles, although I know that's not accurate. The tire/speed calibrator is new and could adjust to a more accurate number soon... possibly?

Keep in mind it could say 295 left, but if you're cruising on a highway at optimal fuel mileage speed, and you drive 15 miles, it could still say 295 miles left even though it "should say 280", but in reality, you just got 310 because of your driving...make sense?

Ya I’m at a “307 right now even though it said 295. Cause it says 267 but I just drove 40miles on trip.

So it might not be as bad. I was tripping I didn’t know the computer forecasted based on previous readings so it threw me off.

I guy said to a brand new Tacoma owner here to becareful not to get Tacoma hypochondria here. But I find out it’s a big family of brothers just like to swap pics, stories , info and life. It’s cool

    And thanks for the feedback

No worries. If you ever change your mind, you could be the first to do a Prius engine transplant...then it'll say you have 4,000 miles left after a fill up! :D Welcome to TW (even though you've been around, you're starting to understand the funky loving dynamics of this great family). Lots of good info, lots of jack-asses, and lots of jack-asses with good info. I fall somewhere in there...I think

I recently unhooked my negative battery terminal to do some work, when I hooked it back up my miles till empty went from 329 to 405 because of the ecu resetting... If it was only that easy...lol

I was wondering the same thing about my Tacoma. When I first got in it said 305 to empty and then 296 and now 256! I do drive over 70 on the thruways everyday to work and back. I did call my buddy who is a sales Manager at Toyota and he explained this but I thought it was him joking around! Guess not hahaha Thanks guys for helping out.

When it also knows the terrain and traffic ahead as well as the speed I’ll be going then I’d believe it.

Reviving for a maybe new issue.

Always have 310+ Distance to empty when full. I topped off recently at 280 miles to empty and it never went up. Keeps counting down like I never topped off. Gas dial is full AF. Is there a way to make it reset without disconnecting the battery?

Maybe it’s learning where you stop to fill it. That would make your new range 280. To relearn go farther.

Explain please? I’ve never topped off. I don’t understand how adding gas can make the distance to empty not go up at all.

EDIT: This is the first time I’ve topped off. I have never filled up when I had more than half a tank. The computer doesn’t take that into consideration. It only takes MPG history into account.

You drove x miles and filled up so it thinks you can go x miles again before the next fill up. Each tank is a distinct number. Like the difference between odo and trip meter. If you don’t stop at 280 to refuel but instead go on to 320 then that might become the new number. Just guessing anyway, I’d have to drive one for awhile to get a feel for it but it sure seems like a crude system that’s not terribly accurate.

That makes no sense at all. And you have a 2nd gen so?

there is a sensor that can tell how full your tank is. That’s how the gas gauge works. Then it uses past mpgs to calculate distance to empty.

And yes it’s not accurate. I could goose it all over town and the 320 it said I have would last 250. Just looking for a way to manually force it to recalculate it’s estimate. Every time I have filled up it’s gone from 100 miles or whatever to 3xx

It’s attempting to cater to your habits. Some people always refuel at 1/4 tank, others at 1/2 tank. Your range is how far you go before refueling regardless of how much is actually left in the tank. I agree, makes no sense at all and why I’ll keep mine another 10 years or so.
It may not work that way but from what I’ve read it’s not worth bothering about and certainly not worth counting on.

Fuckkkkkk. That’s so annoying that one refuel can mess up my distance to empty. I mean I still have a gauge so there’s that. Thanks for schooling me.

You had it right from the start. Mines a 2nd gen so don’t quote me on this stuff. It just seems to work that way is all I can figure from reading 3rd gen posts. There may be a reset from the HU, that would be much preferable to losing the transmission driving data with a hard reset
