It's best to completely ignore the DTE feature, they are next to useless. But if you do use it, it ain't rocket science. The trucks computer calculates your fuel mileage since the last time you reset the trip meter. Lets say you got 18.2 mpg on your last tank. When you fill the tank again it is simple math. 21 gal tank X 18.2mpg=382 miles DTE.

But as you drive fuel mileage fluctuates. For part of the trip you may be getting 21 mpg, on another stretch of road only 12. The DTE display will change based on your current mpg's. My Tacoma is old enough that it doesn't have this feature, but it is on the other vehicles in the driveway. I've seen DTE go up as I drive when conditions allowed better than expected fuel mileage on certain stretches of road.

The problem is that all of these calculations are made based on the miles behind you. Not the miles ahead of you. You may start with a 350 mile DTE and drive in perfect conditions getting 22-23 mpg for the 1st 200 miles. Then hit a stretch of road where you're only getting 10-12 mpg due to road and traffic conditions. If you are 50 miles from the closest fuel stop and your DTE readout says you have enough gas for 112 miles you could easily run out. The truck is basing that 112 miles on the 22-23 mpg you were getting behind you, not the 10-12 mpg you're going to get on the last leg of your trip.

You didn’t read the post I guess. I have consistent mileage on the eco settings. Every time I’ve filled the tank, the distance to empty went up to the appropriate 3xx. This time it didnt.

And it doesn’t use the tripometer. It uses the MPG calculation in the eco app.

The calculations of 'til empty' will be off for every tacoma because it doesn't use the actual tank size. Tacoma has a 21.1 gallon capacity. I've run the truck to zero miles left out of curiosity - twice. Each time I was only able to put ~19 gallons of gas in the truck.

One thing I've always been curious about though was if you pushed it to the limit repeatedly - could you 'train' the computer to give you a more accurate til empty figure.

While trying to empty the tank in preparation for my fuel pump recall appointment I found that it seems pretty accurate with all stock wheels/suspension, I got it down to 2 miles left when I dropped it off at the dealer lol. I was sweating when I picked it up to go find the nearest gas station though...

And yes, this is a bad thing to do because of sucking up crap from the bottom of the tank, etc...I know...

Mine has never said anything near or over 300 when I’ve filled up. Completely stock and now around 7200 miles. My 20 OR always said 265 after fresh fill up.

I did a lot of research on the gallons in the tank at various levels of the gauge and when the light comes on. That is why I have to roll my eyes when you guys say how many "miles per tank" you are getting!

What is "a tank" to you?

A tank is just over 21 gallons... Do any of you drive until the truck stalls from lack of fuel then get towed to a gas station? That is a tank!

That is Empty... but 'Empty' is not the E Line on the gauge!

Here are two possible places you guys are calling "a tank":

*When the low-fuel warning light turns on: you have approx. 4 gallons (+/- 0.5 gallon)... or 17 gallons used.

*When the gas gauge is directly over the E Line: you have approx. 3 gallons (+/-)... or 18 gallons used.

Toyota does a lot of 'padding' so you don't get mad at them when you run out!

The speedometer is also padded to keep you from getting a speeding ticket!

When the speedometer indicates 65 mph, you are closer to actually driving 62 mph. The odometer is correct, however!
Now, if you put tires that are approx. 1 " taller on your truck, like we like to do (265/70-16 to a 265/75-16), it makes the speedometer read correctly... but the odometer is now running slower! So, add in that difference when calculating gas mileage. For us going up 1" in tire size, add 4% to the miles traveled for a true mpg figure... because a taller tire rotates fewer times!

It reset itself today to 320. So all good.
