DIY Cargo Box Locks!

I was wondering if anyone else has any other pics of locks that they've installed on their cargo boxes? Just an idea I had a week or so ago. I went down to the local lock and safe shop and bought a couple of file cabinet locks for around $10.00 bucks. I grabbed my dremel and went to town, first centering where i was to cut the hole on the cargo box door, after installing the lock on the door, then removing the cargo box itself from the bed of the truck and putting some grease on the "lock striker" to mark in relation to where to cut a slot for the striker to go into. Worked like a charm, then I just repeated the same process on the other side. One good thing is the exposed part of the locks are stainless steel, the tumbler pins and springs are brass, and the tumbler housings are die cast metal. So there should'nt be to much an issue with corrosion. I know even with the locks that if someone wants to break in they can, it just would slow them down abit. I don't keep anything high dollar outside anyhow. Just basic tools, flashlight, gloves, rope, tie downs, bungee's etc. For anyone interested I hope this helps give some ideas , and I'd like to see what some of you have come up with.

awesome mod, i just did it and it only took 20 minutes and $10.00!!

 

Should have put the lock inside one of the knobs. Would be cleaner.

 

That's the way I have seen it done.

 

Yeah, but then the lock is on one side. That makes it easier to pry open the other side. I like it in the middle. I think it looks great!

yup - still the door is plastic and if they REALLY want in they are gonna get in and destroy the door. It's a good idea though and keeps honest people honest.

 

As soon as I got mine home I started thinking about locks. I will get them installed this week.
