It's true that they are not interchangeable, but I was able to switch out the 4Runner dial to replace the Tacoma one. I just had to use a dremel to cut the bezel to fit the new round 4Runner switch. Otherwise, the install is exactly as described here by the OP.

I can't get myself to justify $87 for a switch. I hope I get lucky at a junkyard

How well does that 4runner switch match the Tacoma radio surround color?

Mine didn't bother me until I saw this thread!

Now I'm going to have to find a wrecked 4 runner in a bone yard and do this mod!

would an older 4 runner switch work with a 14 tacoma? the newer tacomas can not have the switch illuminated (except for the actual knob) due to the new design. my tacoma has the 4wd switch built right into the dash....A direct fit from the 4 runner would be awesome....Here's my tacoma switch.

Something to add to this somewhat old write up. I was able to get a 4runner switch for $15 at the bone yard. I pried the switch out of the dash and pried the blank off on the other side of the radio so I could push the heater controls out from behind and avoid scratching the dash. Behind that blank was an unused plug that had the correct terminals for the 4wd switch plug so I just cut that plug off, removed the terminals and extended the wires to connect to the dimmer circuit. The bulb was burnt out on the switch I got so I ordered a new one from toyota. The bulb is waiting for me at home today so for a total of $18 I'll finally be able to find that switch in the dark.

Also this is the bulb I ordered so we shall see if it is as bright as the other lights.

It is not as bright but at least I can find the switch now. I'm happy with the results. Anybody need a non illuminated 2005 4runner 4wd switch for cheap?

Maybe this will work? I don't think the guy makes these anymore but here's an idea. I will investigate this as an option for my 15 when I confirm my new one isn't lit.

Apparently the switch was changed on the '12 models. I may have to do a little circuit design.....
