Had the same thing just happen to me.

Ball bearing goes into/rests on a small hole with a tiny spring on the lower white plastic arm that sweeps as the knob is turned.

I didn’t take pics of the switch apart but you’ll need to take the back cover off, and there will be two white pieces that are sandwiching a spring

I believe the lower of the two white pieces house the ball bearing.

The ball bearing is pushed against the wall of the switch which provides the resistance you felt originally.

Ball bearing is circled in red.

And like you, others who have done this mod have done it other ways. The hilux switch is an alternative to the 4Runner, but similar install otherwise. I was hoping someone else might have done it.

    thanks anyways for your help

Has anyone removed a wire from this plug? My 4Runner switch came with the plug and a wire harness and so I wish to pull two wires from the plug to repurpose in my Tacoma plug. I have tried putting a screwdriver in what appears to be the release slot below the plug hole to no avail.

I have not tried with this particular plug but I had a friend give me a rats nest of wiring from an 80's Land Rover Defender one time and spent hours de-pinning all the wires from the various connectors, both for the challenge, learning process and to provide various different colors automotive wires that I might use in the future. I bought a de-pinning tool kit off from Amazon and spent a lot of trial and error getting the wires out of various connectors. Sometimes they popped right out and other times it took awhile, often quick success and slow success happening on the same connector. I am not confident I can provide you with any advice that is guaranteed to offer you success but if you want to send a picture of the offending plug I can see if I can recommend anything. One thing I will suggest is that if you have only tried a screwdriver then switch to something thinner and more pointed. The screwdriver may be too wide to allow you to be able to release the pin.

Here is the one that I purchased:
