Stack some 2X4s, 2X6s, 4X4s, 6X6s, or whatever other lumber you have laying around to make a platform. I used a regular shop jack and put two pieces of 4X4 on top of it to achieve the proper height. Just make sure your front wheels are chocked, and your lifting surface is as stable as possible.

I've developed "the squeak" over the past few months... I had no idea up until now that it was a common issue.

Big THANKS for a great write-up!!!

...now I just need to find time to do this.

I just developed the squeek yesterday. It's coming from the right rear. It only happens when I accelerate from a stop. I'm going to try this fix. I had the rough ride TSB done, so I have 4 leafs , and there are 3 leafs at the C-clamps. Do I need 2 pieces of inner tube at each C-clamp, one between the middle and top leafs, and one between the middle and bottom leafs?

UPDATE: I found time to do the work last friday (6/24/11), but I'm still squeaking :(

1st attempt: added tubes in both gaps at the FRONT of the leaf packs
2nd attempt: added tubes in both gaps at the BACK of the leaf packs

...still gettin' the "squeaky squeaky" at low speeds (rolling <15mph)

Am I doing something wrong? chasing the wrong squeak source, perhaps?

did you take the tubes all the way to the ends? that's where the leafs squeak against eachother.

2010 with 30,00o km I've been squeaking badly for 2 weeks now, especcially when standing on the bumper or getting out of the driver side... it's driving me crazy. I didn't realize it was a common problem. thanks for posting!

i misunderstood...which happens a lot..... ya'll are talking about placing it at the ends of the leaf springs and not towards the center. got it!

that said...how tight are the u-bolts suppose to be torqued....85ftlbs? i jacked up my truck and could not seperate my leaf springs...so I loosened my u-bolts to attempt to help w/the process.

    thanks,

    al

You should NEVER retorque u-bolts, they are a 1 time use thing, after they are loosened they lose thief strength. When you jack the truck up, you are just lifting it up enough to take the weight off the springs... Keep the tires actually on the ground, but just barely... Trick I learned with pullin mount pins out of jet engines actually!

    Thanks for the response beachbumberry.

Another question. Wouldn't the steel of the leaf spring cut through the tube or plastic?

    Thanks,

    Al

    Thanks for the good idea!!

Just did this tonight. I used a heavy duty mountain bike tube from WalMart. The only bad thing was that it had the green slime in it that I had to clean off - a little gasoline and no problem. I was able to do it without jacking it up too.

I folded the tube over itself to make the pad twice as thick - which was then approximately 6 mm prior to getting squeezed between the leaves. i used gorilla glue on the front contact and no glue on the back contact on both sides.

It looked like it should hold for quite some time. I also don't do any major offroading - just some cow pasture driving, so I don't think it will get much wear. We'll see...
