I'm in need of more power, my 5VZ-FE is great but I feel as though there is (a little) missing performance on the interstate. I want to install a simple turbo to bump my HP a little and give me some passing speed.

I'm a fabricator that builds custom intercoolers & radiators for a living for a very well respected company.
An air intercooler should cost me material alone to build, so that and aluminum tubing should be extremely cheap for me.

The question(s) is: What budget options do I have for a turbo, and what designs options do I have to work with for creating my own custom intercooler? (routing, mounting, etc.)

I would like to pipe my air through a snorkel, and have it feed an air filter box (DIY custom options available if it requires) then hit the turbo.

Basic, cheap, and safe are the goals.
If I can keep the cost low, so the wife won't kill me, and not have my engine explode after a 4 hour road trip. That would be great.

Let me hear your thoughts and ideas. Build pics are wanted!

I feel like the inter cooler and piping is the easiest part of putting together kit. More importantly how do you plan to compensate for fuel, mount the turbo, headers...

I don't know the first thing about design of a turbo system, but I will be doing the research in the next few weeks to get an idea of what I can do my self. I can weld like a son of a gun, and have a willingness to learn. The shop I'm in will occasionally let me work on personal projects off-the-clock, so this is possible, I just want some ideas to knock around.

I was looking at a few kits and see the mark up on them, if I can pick parts up separately/used and do all aluminum work myself, I can save some $$$.

After speaking with our lead engineer I decided to not go down the turbo road. The amount of time and money to design, buy, install, and calibrate the parts needed is not necessarily worth it at the moment. While having a turbo taco would be freaking sweet, I'll be spending money on upgrading other parts of the truck that are more important. Thanks for the input though. Maybe one day I can find a turbo kit at a scrap yard =)

    (along with a million dollars)

For fun check out the mighty car mods you tube channel and watch the how to build a sleeper (super gramps) series. I've learned a lot of what's possible through custom fab work from those guys.
